For those without myspace accounts, I made the cliff's notes version: http://myspacesuicide.ytmnd.com/

Yes, yes, I know. It's not funny. But it's funny because it's an emo kid, on myspace (major emo territory) and people are used to making fun of emos on myspace. And now one "commited suicide" but happens to be logged in right now. Internet connections in hell? You be the judge.

Okay, what's an "emo" for those of us unschooled in cyber-drivel?

Making teenagers depressed is like shooting fish in a barrel.  I love how the "non-conformist" cultures have a dresscode that is enforced with the strictness of a Marine Corps DI.  Remember, you are unique, just like everyone else

One of my professors has an idea to solve these problems.  You take every male on his 13th birthday, and lock him and his peers in a gym with lots of basketballs and endless pizza.  In five years, you open the door, and ask who's ready to come out and be an adult.  Whoever doesn't want to can stay for another five years.  It would solve a whole lot of problems.

Tell me more about myspace. My kid (14) and her little friends seem to be collecting there. She claims to know nothing about this suicide and naturally followed up with, "Why do people commit suicide?" I told her some people have something wrong in their brain or thought process that causes this. On the very unfortunate side she had a cousin take his own life at 19 about 3-4 years ago, using a gun BTW, which opened up a whole can of worms in terms of the risks of other family members following suit, placing her at a higher risk.

Let me get this straight:

Some kid logged on to the myspace web site.

Said kid is a fan of something called "emo".

??The kid has posted a suicide gesture??

Said child is also currently logged-on, so maybe the gesture is hot air?

Is this right?  We're laughing because the kid hasn't really done himself in?

I hope?

well he probably logged on, made his post, then did himself in.  If he's dead he didn't likely get a chance to log off.

No, I am not laughing either.  Sure the kid was young and dumb, and he obviously had a poor outlook on life.  Hey, that would have been a good description of me ten years ago.

Nonetheless he has hurt many people.  I can't imagine what his parents are going through right now.

I have a different opinion of gangster rappers.  They preach, glorify, and make a living off of promoting gang activity and violence.  If they become victims of what they preach, you won't hear me crying for them.

Thats what I got out of it.

From what I understand, any parent with teenage or preteen kids might want to brush up on the whole Myspace thingie.  Its a big thing for that generation.   Several coworkers read their kids myspace religiously.....and to quote what one said to his teenager

I guess you have to have caught part of the "internet generation" while growing up to really understand the humor of the whole thing. THe whole deal with "emo" kids (its a new term for an old thing, high strung whiney little momma's boys would be more generally understood) "killing themselves" and then starting a new account to watch people lament is pretty old-hat. its an internet cliche, as old as the one about guys pretending to be girls while online to get attention.

This is going to prevent suicide, or what?  Ages 13-18 spent in a smelly gym with only males, basketballs, and pizza?  I would certainly figure out a way to kill myself with a basketball within the first 2 weeks.

Can you show me the link to a news story about this?  I just searched MSN and Fox News and I can't find anything.  So, I went and did a search under "suicide" on myspace and I got nada there either.  I'm still in the camp that it's a hoax, hoping it's a hoax very much.  It tears me up to think of kids doing themselves in when there are so many people who would care if they only knew how.

One of my favorite poets:

When you're lost in the Wild, and you're scared as a child,
     And Death looks you bang in the eye,
And you're sore as a boil, it's according to Hoyle
     To cock your revolver and . . . die.
But the Code of a Man says: "Fight all you can,"
     And self-dissolution is barred.
In hunger and woe, oh, it's easy to blow . . .
     It's the hell-served-for-breakfast that's hard.

"You're sick of the game!" Well, now, that's a shame.
     You're young and you're brave and you're bright.
"You've had a raw deal!" I know -- but don't squeal,
     Buck up, do your damnedest, and fight.
It's the plugging away that will win you the day,
     So don't be a piker, old pard!
Just draw on your grit; it's so easy to quit:
     It's the keeping-your-chin-up that's hard.

It's easy to cry that you're beaten -- and die;
     It's easy to crawfish and crawl;
But to fight and to fight when hope's out of sight --
     Why, that's the best game of them all!
And though you come out of each gruelling bout,
     All broken and beaten and scarred,
Just have one more try -- it's dead easy to die,
     It's the keeping-on-living that's hard.

--Robert Service

Although it technically is sad that someone killed himself, however it is an emo on myspace which earns triple cliche points.

LawDog, I think I'm going to print that out and post it somewhere prominent. Thanks.

There's one by Rudyard Kipling in a similar vein, but more upbeat:

Quote
[IF]

        If you can keep your head when all about you
        Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
        If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
        But make allowance for their doubting too,
        If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
        Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
        Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
        And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

        If you can dream--and not make dreams your master,
        If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;
        If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
        And treat those two impostors just the same;
        If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
        Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
        Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
        And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

        If you can make one heap of all your winnings
        And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
        And lose, and start again at your beginnings
        And never breath a word about your loss;
        If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
        To serve your turn long after they are gone,
        And so hold on when there is nothing in you
        Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

        If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
        Or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch,
        If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
        If all men count with you, but none too much,
        If you can fill the unforgiving minute
        With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
        Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
        And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!

        --Rudyard Kipling
