Maxine Waters" "Socialist" Mis-speak on TV
« on: May 22, 2008, 02:29:35 PM »
Or not. News showed her lecturing Shell Oil CEO after he guaranteed that prices for gas would continue upward if Congress didn't authorize more drilling (in ANWAR, etc).

The Gentle Congresslady spat back at him: "and I guarantee you that this Liberal will be all about socializing...errr" <silence> <thinking> <loses train of thought> "This Liberal ..."

"Anyway, at bottom line..."

Priceless. Scared herself shitless by utterance of the word "Socializing."

Yes!  Socialize the oil industry.  Great idea!  Then we will all bathe in oil and drive cross-country just for fun.  In semi trucks.

The Democrats want to nationalize all industries (Michael Harrington is a must read among them), but oil would be a convenient target especially with Obama in.

Yes it would. Of everything that is going on right now, gas prices are something just about everyone talks about. There are a lot of people (ignorant) who would just beg for the government to "do something" about those evil big oil companies.

I seen that yesterday on Fox news.  When she made the comment about taking over the oil companies, Hugo Chavez came to mind.

Scary stuff for sure.  Made me want to go reload more ammo.

All we have to do is mandate all cars made be flex fueled or run on more than one type of fuel and costs will drop like a rock. When oil has to compete with homegrown E85 they will drop the price to try and push out the competition.

Okay, based on this and your posts on the Obama thread, are you here from DU or Daily Kos?

Seriously.

You're not going to find many people here who think More Government is a good idea. In fact, it's a pretty damned stupid idea.

Alternative fuels are not available enough nor cheap enough to make any difference whatsoever in the short run.  Ethanol is only there due to govt subsidies and mandates.  A mandate like that will do nothing but cost a lot of people money who can't afford it.

How about mandating all NEW cars be fuel agnostic?  Makes sense anyway as fuel prices go up and possible shortages arise.  Can't afford or find gasoline, burn diesel, biodiesel, Exx, etc.  I'd certainly give strong consideration to such a vehicle.

How about not "mandating" anything and letting the market solve its own problems through comparative costs of fuels? If anything, remove the stupid red tape that keeps all the new turbodiesels out of the US market.

I'd rather not be mandated out of my 30-32mpg gasoline vehicle that I own outright, thanks.

Who said anything about the car you own today?  I'm talking about new production.  The feds are already mandating all sorts of crap with regards to cars, at least have them mandate something useful.

Oh, and your 30-32mpg vehicle is gonna be real useful if you can't get or afford gas, which was my point.  I'd like to see some vehicles that can burn just about any currently available automotive fuel.

Again, though, there's a whole line of wonderfully efficient turbodiesels waiting to come in, from all the major makers. Honda's been selling a quiet, powerful Accord Diesel in Europe for years, but they can't sell it here. It gets 52mpg. No urea tank, either. Their Euro version has nicer lines than the slabsided US version, at that.

All the lawmakers need to do is get out of the way.

Yes, those are nice and I'm well aware of them.  I'm thinking a bit further ahead though, for times when fuel of any kind isn't quite so common or cheap.  Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have a turbodiesel Honda TODAY, but I'm looking to the point in time where all fuel is expensive and you may not have the type selection.  I *think* the military Humvee is almost that agnostic, which gives us a model to go by.

But he's right.  Our government is already preventing us from buying the best engines and vehicles available today, and preventing our industry from utilizing the best sources of energy we have now.  Adding even more restrictions on what we're allowed to drive or where we're allowed to find energy will only make things worse.

The problem is too much government.  The solution is not to add even more government.

I guess I've been living in a cave for awhile cuz I don't understand the deal with that HONDA.

Why would the US government keep that Honda out of the country if it's got an engine that gets 52 mpg? Seems like they'd want it here. Honda has a factory in the US (KY?) - why couldn't Honda just build the car here if there is some import restriction?

Is this something like the absurd sugar tariff thing that keeps us paying $'s a pound instead of cents a pound for sugar?

Environmental and emissions paperwork red tape via legislators. It's a long, expensive process to certify a vehicle for sale in the US due to the legislative headaches.

The point is that mandating something the market will do anyway makes no sense.  Mandates always have unintended consequences such as the emissions mandates.

From what I understand, Europe has a lower standard for certain types of particulate emissions than we do, and those diesel engines can't meet our regulations without significantly adding to the expense of the engine and decreasing performance and reliability.

Meeting US requirements for ULSD diesel and for emissions will easily knock 20% off the fuel efficiency of that Honda.
