Have you read these books?
« on: December 10, 2007, 02:03:51 PM »
I've read these books, most of them fairly recently, and would like to hear your opinions on them.  I don't have an especial axe to grind about any of them.  Of course, I might find one.   smiley

The Looming Tower - Lawrence Wright

The Founders and the Classics - Carl J. Richard

The Ideological Origins of the American Revolution - Bernard Bailyn

Vindicating the Founders: Race, Sex, Class and Justice in the Origins of America - Thomas G. West

Till We Have Faces - C.S. Lewis

The Space Trilogy (or Ransom Trilogy) - C.S. Lewis

Thanks.

One Lewis book that I stalled out on pretty quickly.  I'm not sure why -- that was long ago.

I dig them out every once in a while to re-read.  They each have their moments.  I quite like the scene where Lewis through the voice of the eldil Malecandra savages the human manifest destiny == space travel talk that is (or was) common in SF.

I read a lot of books, but not a single one of those.  Do you recommend them?

If you liked the Ransom books, I really think you will like TWHF.  It seems terribly un-Christian to begin with, but you get the point eventually.  All is not as it seems.

The Space Trilogy: Haven't read it since 1994.  I need to give it another go.  I have more patience for Sirens of Titan, and I read that every few years.

Till We Have Faces: On my shelf, but like so many others, remains unread.

Read _That Hideous Strength_

Enjoyed the philosophy of it, but not really a classic sci-fi fan.  Also don't really like Lewis's characters.  And the pervasive dreariness and rising chaos started spilling over into too many other thoughts, which was not pleasant.

I haven't read those but I did just finish 'Blood Moon Rising'.  Espionage thriller written by Eric Wiggen.
He's a Christian author and a pretty good writer.

Chalk me up with lee n. field.

I know what Til we have faces is about and what Lewis is trying to do.  It just doesn't capture me.

I do like that Lewis is fond of having bears kill people, both the Narnia and Perelandra books feature it.

Perhaps someone should alert Colbert?

I read that a long time ago - what a weird story.

Is Out of the Silent Planet one of the trilogy ?

And here I thought you were just into ARMORED FREAKIN' POLAR BEARS!!!

If a book doesn't have any, I just mentally replace a noun picked at random with that phrase.

In "Out of the Silent Planet" the noun I replaced was "space".  grin
