Random Thought - Weather Radio in Car Stereo
« on: February 07, 2011, 04:05:57 PM »
Why do car stereos not have a weather radio built in?  It seems to me it would not be technically difficult to do.  Too late now since that would probably be viewed as detracting from a satellite subscription, but why was this not done a long time ago?

Bubble gum.

Maybe I could use that to stick the 9V Realistic weather radio to the dash!

Harmon-Kardon manufacture, I believe.  If you want one, look for "Marine" stereos

I've been considering getting one.  Storms in the gulf tend to pop up and can be downright nasty.

I *should* be able to convert my current chartplotter to use weather.

I don't see that many weather radios around. I'm guessing they're uncommon in cars because there's not much demand.

My friend's Subaru Outback has one from the factory.

Sony and Blaupunkt both offer broadcast+shortwave+weather in several models not sold in North America.  For whatever reason, it's nearly impossible to get a reasonably priced in-dash stereo with shortwave (or, for that matter, particularly good AM broadcast reception) in the U.S.

Is it a radio problem or an antenna problem?

My father in law somehow needed a new radio for his caravan.
His only request was "good am reception"
He liked to go down to the beach and listen to a low-watt Milwaukee station (75 miles west) that broadcast only during daylight hours.
At the local junkyard automobile recycler, I went through 5 radios before one actually worked well enough-  i.e. even reception and ignition shielded - to meet his specs.  These were stored indoors - pull outs from stock vans.  Extreme variability.
