The short version is that the girl's parents got busted a few years back for illegally killing wolves and trying to FedEx the hides into Canada.  The parents lost their hunting licenses over that.  So now when the family needs to take predators on their property the three children do it under their own licenses.

The authors want you to think this is a big deal and try to make hay over it.

Being a native newyorker I can assure you that there are a good few million people in NYC area who believe it's better for humans to be eaten/killed by wolves/mtn lions rather than kill them first. ....
