I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.

No.  Crazy, not stupid.

I read through the thread on that board you linked, and somebody said something about taking the driveshaft out when you tow an automatic.  I've seen some sort of axle decoupling device on some vehicles for towing, but are you really supposed to remove the driveshaft?

Even in neutral, some auto-trannies will lock up.  No fluid being pumped when the engine isn't running.  Same result.  Mercedes used to be the worst...

Az, yes.  If you're going to be towing an automatic RWD vehicle any distance over a couple of miles, you certainly should remove the driveshaft.  Otherwise, as the rear wheels turn, the differential will spin the driveshaft, and that will spin the transmissions outputshaft, and the gears splined to it.  (Usually, the input shaft is engaged to the output shaft by internal clutches, so usually, that won't be turned.)  The front pump will NOT be turned, so there will be no transmission fluid pumped through it, so no lubrication is possible.  Therefore, you have metal parts rotating with no lube.

Was the driver so oblivious that he didn't notice the increased drag?

Let me tell you about one of my "little" brothers who got stopped while towing a car at 105 mph. shocked The truck had a 454 in it.

Let's just say not ALL tow truck drivers are rocket scientists. These days it's usually some dumb kid like my brother.
