Yo, BSL! Courtesy phone please....
« on: June 08, 2013, 04:32:25 PM »
Liz, a friend is tending someone's dogs while they're away.  One of the dogs, a GSD, has a problem with flies (not fleas) attacking his ears and nibbling on them.  The GSD doesn't do any kind of shooing behavior and just lets the flies chomp away.  Can you recommend a treatment or product that will get the flies to leave the poor dog's ears alone?

This may help;

I wonder if a heavy sunblock, like a SPF 50 or so, heavy lotion, would help?

Thanks, Bob.  I figure I'll collect as many ideas as I can and pass them on to my buddy.

Go get some SWAT. Also, if you don't like having dogs with some hot pink paint, fly spray works too, just not as well and requires constant spritzing to really keep the flys gone.

The SWAT works best. It's a thick, hot pink paste that you can put where the flys congregate and it will stay on for several days to a week. It's sold for horses and livestock, but you really can use it on dogs. The only trick is your really don't want them eating it, but since the issue is on the ears, it shouldn't be an issue.

Ahhh, the BSL is a quick one!  Thanky. And if anyone knows anyone in the LV area that would have a good home for a GSD, my friend is really working on getting a new family for the dog.  He's sure the current owner will go along with that as long as it's to a good home.  Current owner's new girlfriend is not dog friendly.  IMO, that means new girlfriend quickly becomes ex-girlfriend  :P , but that's just me.

Get rid of the GF, keep the dog.

Unfortunatly, I know of no one in the area. Tell him to get ahold of GS rescue and see if they have some ideas.

Again, the best solution is to get a new GF.

Loving someone means you have to love their furry friends too. ;)

I'm in total agreement on the proper ordering of priorities.  =)

And good idea about GS rescue.  I'll mention that to him too.

ETA: His wife says "thanks" for the GS rescue idea.  They're looking in to that.

I have no clue, but I would think weight would be a factor.

It stands for German Shepard Dog.

And I'd love to have one. Beautiful beautiful dawgs. A dude who'd get rid of his dog for a GF is a dumbass.

The two kittens that we got from a neighbor's litter last fall were a brother and sister, so we named them Simon and River.

Now River has her own kittens.

It was actually a stuffed animal that was frequently mistaken for a real dead cat.

And on a totally different, yet related note...

Bugsy Siegel's crazy (literally!) sister, JoAnne (not sure of the spelling) used to ride the city bus frequently.  There was a period of time when she carried a cat in a pet carrier.  One day a supervisor required her to let him see the cat before she could ride.  Yep, it was a dead cat.  And it had been dead for a significant period of time.

(as told to me by the supervisor who inspected the cage)
