GSD = german shepherd dog
ASD = anatolian shepherd dog
BC = Border Collie
DSH = domestic short hair (cat)
DLH = domestic long hair (cat)
PBGV = petit basset griffon vendeen
BRT = black russian terrier
PB = pit bull
OEBD = old english bull dogge
BD = bull dog (can be proceded with "A" for american or "e" for english)
CS = cocker spanial (can also be proceded with "a" or "e")

Industry jargon.

I'm 69 years old. My aunt bred Collies and Standard Poodles. We owned Collies and German Shepherds, and I know police officers who have German Shepherds as their canine partners.

I have never (until this thread) encountered the acronym GSD. They have always been referred to as "German Shepherds" or just "Shepherds."

Hawkmoon,

"just shepherds" would get really confusing, really quick where I work. ;)

Threads like this make me wonder if anyone has ever used that stuff for what it was intended for? Between a mosquito repellent, and now a fly repellent for dogs, I wonder why they even market it as a lotion anymore.  ;)

We got our first GSDs when I was a kid,  and were horrified the first time they had bloody, flew chewed ears.  That greasy, smelly crap put an end to the fly issue immediately.

LOL I went to Boot Camp in Paris Island.  Usually, the DI's didn't care if the sand fleas made chow chow out of us.  Sometimes, especially during drill, they wanted to make sure we got a particular thing or another, so we got to use the skin so soft to repel the little bastards (sand fleas that is).  Of course, once doused with skin so soft, you'd better behave....otherwise, it's a roll in the sand pit..... :rofl:

Hawkmoon,

"just shepherds" would get really confusing, really quick where I work. ;)

But you work in the "industry" (or "profession"). Industry jargon should be confined to the industry, where it is understood.

How far would we get if I asked a question involving NEC, ICC, IBC, IEBC, CIF, SRF, MOE, UDFL, etc.?

Not far, I suspect. I work with those acronyms (and many more) on a daily basis. But I don't go on an open forum and expect other people to understand them.

Personally, I had never been exposed to "GSD" until I saw it used here in various threads.  I picked up what it meant from the context of the thread.  If I run across a word or acronym I'm not familiar with, I've discovered that I don't need a dictionary these days.  What with that innernetz thing I can highlight the word, right click it, and choose "Search Google for..." from the context menu.  I'll usually get the correct meaning in the first few results.

I used to hate being told by a teacher to look up words I couldn't spell.  Spelling the word is a part of looking up, ain't it?

Except we're talking about dogs.

Breed fanciers, be they professionals, breeders, handlers, owners, rescue workers, club memebers and on and on, generally know the various acronyms for commen breeds.
I wouldn't expect you to know PGBV or BRT or even Presa, Fila, or Dogo. Not because of the acronym or shortened names, but just because the breeds are rare.
But German Shepherd Dogs, well, everyone knows what that is.

I was gonna be a smart butt and prove that GSD is easy compared to other acronyms, but there are more GSDs then I had planned. However, I am still a smart butt, because they are almost equal to amount of RTTs and GSD as German Shepherd Dog on wiki is the SECOND link to pop up on a google search. So there :P

Well, at least two of us just here on this forum didn't, so I think that's more than sufficient to prove that not "everyone" knows.
