USA Gun Owners Buy 14 Million Plus Guns In 2009 – More Than 21 of the Worlds Standing Armies Combined
That is 14,033,824,000 billion+ rounds of Ammo..you think that is why we have an Ammo shortage?
Total NICS Gun Buyer Background Checks 2009

Total NICS Gun Buyer Background Checks 2009

Washington, DC --(AmmoLand.com)- Data released by the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) for the year reported 14,033,824 NICS Checks for the year of 2009, a 10 percent increase in gun purchases from the 12,709,023 reported in 2008.

So far that is roughly 14,000,000+ guns bought last year!
The total is probably more as many NICS background checks cover the purchase of more than one gun at a time by individuals.

To put it in perspective that is more guns than the combined active armies of the top 21 countries in the world. countries by number of troops

Of the NICS background checks preformed less than and average .005% were denied, showing, overwhelmingly, that law abiding American citizens are the ones buying guns and that criminals are getting their guns elsewhere.

14,033,824,000 billions rounds of Ammo
Assuming each gun buyer bought 1000 rounds of ammo for each purchase, and you and I know that it is way, way more than that, that would be easily 14,033,824,000+ billions rounds of ammo fired by USA gun owners.

What percent of people were killed or injured by this ammo…it is just to infinitesimally small for me to calculate?

Crime At Record Lows
This record year in firearms background checks show that Americans are solidly in-favor of exercising their civil right to Keep and Bear Arms.

In a year were crime has reached an all time record low what is plainly clear is that more guns equal LESS CRIME!

I don't get it: what's the relevance of the Wiki entry ranking countries by number of troops?

I don't think that the average person that bought a gun last year also bought 1000 rounds of ammo for it as well.  Wonder where that stat comes from?

I only bought one gun in 2009.   =(  One gun a year is about all I've been able to afford over the last four or so years (already bought my gun for 2010, so unless I get a good job sometime in the next several months, that will probably be all I can afford this year as well).

I don't think that the average person that bought a gun last year also bought 1000 rounds of ammo for it as well.  Wonder where that stat comes from?

From all the people who bought 10,000 plus in a fit of hoarding.

I'm curious how many guns were actually purchased. Many states don't require a NICS check with a CCW, others have a state level check.

I only bought one, a small S&W .38SPL, and I got that just because it was a killer deal and I really wanted a better snubby than my Taurus .22 for quick carry purposes.

But I did help a couple of newbies buy their first guns that year.  Never asked if it was because of Obama and the Democratic Party takeover of Congress but I suspect it was.

2 in 2009 but I managed 5 in 2008.

Three.

M1 Garand + lotsa ammo
M1 Carbine + lotsa ammo
Rem 870 12ga

That ^^^ was unusual in both quantity and that all were long guns.

I do, have to admit, that my buying guns wasn't due to Obama. It was because I turned 21 and could finally buy handguns. Woohoo!

Same here. Would've bought as many as my pay checks allowed though if it weren't for the licenses required for each gun. I shall improve this year though and buy 4 long guns for hunting, hopefully this summer! >:D =D

Six (6).  Or Five (5) depending on how you want to count them.  Sent one back to the manufacturer so many times they swapped out a 4" barrel version for the snubbie that wouldn't work.  They also sent me a total of three (3) cases of ammo to shut up and go away! =D

I've already gotten one this year.  Yes, I needed it - if I did not buy it a screaming deal would not have taken place.  There was no way I could allow that to be on my conscience.

I'm off the the gunshow tomorrow looking for at least one more addition to the gun safe.  After that I might consider thinning the herd.  (Yes, Balog, you have first refusal on the Downsizer if I ever think of letting it go.)

stay safe.

I didn't buy near as much ammo in 2009 as I have in years past.  I couldn't find any for most of the year and when I did it was usually overpriced.  I didn't do much shooting, either.

I would have thought they would use manufacturer information, but you might be right about that.

I was thinking to dispute the 1000 rounds of ammo stuff, but then I thought about how much ammo I really bought last year.  :D
