If you have a less effective variant of a gene that breaks down Sarin and were exposed to Sarin in the Gulf, this may explain Gulf War Syndrome.

Interesting. 

They mention the source as the US bombing of Iraqi chemical weapons factories/stockpiles.  Our military barely went into Iraq in the first Gulf War.  Were those chemical weapons in the South?  Not sure I remember all the details.  Sounds like there is more to the story as far as when people may have been exposed.
