Had to show this to you guys and gals. Dad and I have a couple of lots that are old railroad right-of-way. We have no use for them but someone might. I'm doing a test run on e-bay to see if there's any interest.
As much as the "Buy It Quick" marketing model appalls me it seem that's what gets people to look, so that's how it's set up. I cringe every time I look at it but, judging by the other auctions on e-bay, that's what works. I used a couple of them as models to set up the auction. Ick. Here it is in all it's infomercialistic glory...

I'm not an Us resident otherwise I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
How many squaremeters would 0.16 acres be ?
I'll go and have a look at Wikipedia.
500 bucks for a piece of land, I have never thought that
this was possible....
"The United States survey acre is approximately 4046.873 square meters;"
So that would be 4046.873 / 100 x 16 ?
= 647.50 m2 / 499 = $ 1.30 for a square meter .
-
Your calcs are correct.
0.16 acre = 0.064752 hectare = 647.52 sq meter
I put it as US residents only to keep the proxy bidder and send-you-an-overseas-certified-check rifraff at bay. If you want it, and if US law allows, by all means take a stab at it. I wouldn't have any problem with a fellow APS'er getting it, regardless of where they live. Just understand it's chunk of old railroad right of way in a little town that's in the middle of nowhere.
I have 60 more if you want them.

what is the annual taxes and can it pretty much sit vacent for years, like no mowing or trash pickup? I imagine it probably would become a dumpsite with no one around.
-C
-
I don't have my file with me, but if memory serves the taxes are a whopping ten bucks a year.
Brad
-
do you have to keep it mowed or anything like that?
-
Look at where it is. Caliche is basically "paved."
-
Can someone put a mobile home on it? How many trans-camaros do you think will fit after you do that?
-
If I buy it cheap I don't want to have to go down once a month to mow, remove all the trash and/or remove squatters.
-

It hasn't been mowed in fifty years. Why start now? That would just screw up the look and make people wonder about you..
Brad
-
How many trans-camaros do you think will fit after you do that?
None. All the Transmaros are still nice enough to be drivers. Besides, there won't be any room because of your collection of old trucks and junk school buses. Where do you think the engines for the Transmaro aregoing to come from.

$3,125 per acre
That's pretty expensive land by my standards.
My land was only $2,750 per acre 5 years ago, and it came with a nice house on it
-
City lot prices and land-by-the-acre prices are two different critters.
If you want land there is a ranch for sale in the county for a mere $1000 an acre. All 3800 of them. I sure wouldn't mind helping someone buy that!

If the price was $3,125 per acre for Ag land here in Iowa, it would be sold faster than the ink could dry. The sad part is you couldn't turn the note in 30 years on the crop production profits.

I'm not sure about this - the seller doesn't seem to return e-mail very well...
-
The first land I bought I paid $375 an acre. It was tucked in against the base of a mountain in Central Pennsylvania surrounded by farms. Couldn't farm it, which is why it was so cheap. I was going to build a hunting cabin on it. Never got around to it, and ended up selling it for $400 an acre to a guy who did put a cabin on it.
-
So how much was the BIN set at?
-
I'm not sure about this - the seller doesn't seem to return e-mail very well...
It took the Seller a while to formulate and equally snarky reply. Besides, you have a neggie on your account so I can't trust you now, can I?
So how much was the BIN set at?
It was $499.00. As of this morning it was still showing up. I just looked and it's gone. I can't figure out why other than the BIN feature is time-limited. They got their fee so I guess they are satisfied. I'll still honor the BIN price if anyone wants to pay it. I put a note at the bottom of the auction to that effect.
Brad
-
If you don't set a reserve, BIN disappears with the first bid. If you do set a reserve, BIN lasts until the reserve is met or the auction ends.
-
Well, you may notice that my neggie came from someone who is no longer in bidness... They showed a picture of a nice amplifier, and sent me something that looked like it went down a flight of stairs, didn't answer their e-mail, etc., etc., and when I negged them, they negged me back.
The amp is currently over at a friend's place. He discovered that the problem was in the bridging switch when he wiggled it. While holding the leads in his mouth. It's a 130 wpc old school high current solid state Hafler amp. Heh, heh... I _wish_ I had that on video... He was thinking it'd be like a "radio."

Gotcha. Thanks for the heads-up. Stupid rule, but I guess as long as it's their name on the sign I have to play by it.

I'd have almost given you one of the lots just to see that on video!
I saw the seller you neggied you had a BUNCH of negs on his. He had like 23k ratings! Jeez that's a boatload of auctions.
Brad

woo, I'm still the high bidder at $2.23.

not for long, but first I have to make a post orifice run...

I'm the highest bidder now... muha ha ha..

I have no idea what I'd do with it...

lets not get into a bidding pissing match.. I think that is what Brad wants us to do, profit at our testosterone.

BAM
-
Bogie did you say you know someone that fixes those old hafler amps? I have or had if I can find them 2 of those bad boys, if I remember correctly each of them had one dead channel. And they don't look like they went down a flight of stairs.
-
I know an guy up near Chicago who likes to rebuild them... E-mail me at bogie@creativeaccuracy.com and I'll try to hunt down his info. He's reputable, and won't hurt you.
If you wanna get medieval with 'em, John Hillig a few miles from here does very nice stuff with 'em, but you'll spend some serious money...

And you get a free pile of soil!

Funny you should say that, I have a house listed in Roaring Springs.

They have dream homes in lubbock?
I've had those dreams before. I usually wake up shivering and crying like a little girl.

Who owns the minerals?
Did the RR grant any utility easements that still affect the property?
Has the lot ever been exposed to hazardous waste, underground storage tanks or other environmental conditions which may restrict the purchaser's use of the property, subject the purchaser to existing, foreseeable or unforeseeable remediation expenses, and/or be a source of potential civil or criminal liability?
Was the location ever used as a burial ground for slaves or Indians?
Any gang problems in that part of town?
-
Who owns the minerals?
Auction description.
Did the RR grant any utility easements that still affect the property?
You have to have utilities to have easements. This is Foard county. They just got their first flush toilet and are still trying to figure out how to operate it.

It stopped glowing last year and I'm told the smell should go away. Eventually.
Was the location ever used as a burial ground for slaves or Indians?
Probably. Plus a few cross burnings and ritual sacrifice or two. But the devil worshipers who have their annual enclave there haven't mentioned anything odd.
Any gang problems in that part of town?
No. All the gangs seem to get along fine.

Sounds like a great place to build a porch for the old travel trailer I'm going to buy someday. Until then I could just sit on the porch with my favorite folding chair and cooler (purchased from the Wal-mart Super Center in Vernon) and shoot empties with my Red Ryder.
-
Works for everyone else there. Don't see why it wouldn't for you.
Brad
-
And here I sit in a $300k house on a 25.5' x 90' lot.
I could be a real landowner. It's almost enough to make me retire and move to the country.
-
Are there any deed restrictions listed on the deed? chris
-

There won't be on the one I supply, nor have I seen any on the docs dad received when he got the lots.

Yep, and once they figure out how to drive the septic tank they're going to invade either Mexico or Oklahoma.
-
I wouldn't mind buying a cheap rental in Texas. Like an inexpensive condo in Austin that stays rented. I've got 20k, Brad, what will that buy me?
-
hehe, in Austin?
You might get someone's garage.
-
This is actually the post that made me sign up here, after it showed up linked in the RSS feed of one of the blogs I read. Can't believe that land can be had so cheap, even if it's out in the middle of nowhere. Hell, I live in the middle of nowhere in Virginia and bare brush property still sells for around ten times as much.
-
Well, welcome to wherever we are...
Texas is a different country. There's a whole lot of it.
And it's REALLY boring to drive through.
-
I've got 20k, Brad, what will that buy me?
A ratty cardboard box on the corner of 6th and Congress.

Guys, bidding's in the 150s, with about four hours to go...
Some linkage...

Looks like it's the Wild Hog Capital of the World...
I wonder if my little .357 Winchester with a 158 grain JHP would work?
-
even if I don't win, I'm going to make Brad a few more bucks...
-
Thanks guys.
And, yes, a .357 will work but you best be a good shot with it. Them critters be tough!
Brad
-
If whoever gets it wants to, I'll make a sign for you...
"Future home of APS Clubhouse - Lock up anything you care about!"
and I'll mail it down to Brad, who could then venture by at a convenience (NOTHING is convenient in Texas...), blow a hole in the top layer, and sink a stake...
-
22 minutes left, under $300, paperwork included. Such a deal. And it's the Hog Capital of the world...
You know, I can't believe that NOBODY posted any bad nasties about Phil today...
-
I have about 60 more lots just like this one. They are all up and down the old rail bed you see in the pic. This one is one of five stacked north-south, with Lot 1 being the northernmost. The long side of the lots runs east-west.
In other words, they are stacked like this...
____ (L1)
____ (L2)
____ (L3)
____ (L4)
____ (L5)
In the same block I also have Lots 11 and 12. They sit directly behind 1 and 2. Lot 12 is the northermost.
Lot 2 goes on e-bay Monday.
Brad

Looks like it's over. Any of you guys the winner?

Well, the first one went well enough I decided to put lots 2-5 on evilbay. Spread the word, dudes...
