Even Hillary knows he's got no substance

MARION, Ind. - Hillary Rodham Clinton takes the debate dispute to a new level, challenging her opponent Barack Obama to face off with her in a debate without a moderator, Lincoln-Douglas style.

The Democratic presidential candidate said while campaigning in South Bend, Indiana, on Saturday the 90-minute debate would allow two candidates to ask each other questions.

Her campaign formally made the offer in a letter to the Obama campaign.

Clinton has been putting increasing pressure on Obama to debate her again before the Indiana and North Carolina primaries in nine days.

Anyone else think she'd eat him alive in an unmoderated debate?

Because she's a better debater or because she's known to feed upon the flesh of the living?

Has he (or she for that matter) ever done anything really unscripted?

Uh, no-I think she is hoping to psych him out of an unmoderated debate, but Hilary is about one of the most uninspiring, credibility lacking speakers I've seen since John Kerry danced his way to a dismal 2004 finish.

She's gotten where she has in this primary by playing the race card and pretending to be the Margaret Thatcher of the 21st century.  Her actual skill as a politician/orator is about up there with Kerry's, and not far beyond.

Oratorical skills and debating skills don't really have much in common.

I believe I can speak for all political persuasions in this.

I miss statesmanlike leaders.

I know the aggressive modern press has a lot to do with the decline in "appearances" but can't anyone turn a phrase anymore?

I still think she might pull off her skin to reveal that she's a giant lizard, then devour him.

It'd be the first time someone's soul was devoured on primetime television.

I'll DVR it.  grin

Exactly.
And, unlike Obama, Hillary has a platform.  And she's not stupid enough to accuse the people of bitterly holding onto god and guns.  Obama can't seem to do anything that isn't written on a script.
and, of course, if she pulled off her skin and devoured him, that'd be a bonus.

From across the water it seems the only thing she has to gain from this is to use his inevitable refusal as a stick to beat him with.

He won't suffer too much from that I wouldn't think, and he's not about to enter into the suicide pact that an unmoderated national debate could easily become. Seems to me they would both lose, but she has shown an emotional, easily riled side it seems. She would probably lose worse. If that is possible.

As much as I despise Hillary one has to acknowledge that she's not dumb. Obama on the other hand is a tool and the way he stumbles when answering unexpected questions is telling.

Hillary would chew him up and spit him out in any unrehearsed conversation between the two.

Heard on the news this morning that he refused it.

Good comeback answer, though, to the effect of "we should be talking to the voters, not each other."

Barry is not quick on his feet.  If you press him, he mutters "ummmm" or lights another cigarette.

I think "Al Taquia" is a lot more fitting than "Barry", especially seeing how he's been helping his cousin to get Sharia law established in Kenya.

Got a link?

Not challenging, just want to read about it and get the details.

That's too much comment to go uncited.  smiley

Oratorical skills and debating skills don't really have much in common.

They do when the debate is conducted orally-the tool you use to make the debate is oratory.

I believe Iain has his finger on the issue here.

I think he's remarking that the ability to give, say, a good fireside chat does not necessarily mean you also possess the very different skill set to "win" in an active argument.

Forensics versus Oratory.

You get the cookie, Carebear.

I've seen ferocious debaters who zero oratorical skills, and I've seen people who have incredible oratorical skills with zero debating ability.

To find an individual with highly developed abilities in both arenas is extremely rare.

A good example is Winston Churchill.

I'd love to see a series of debates held to high school debate rules.  Nothing fancy just cut the media completely out of the mix.  I would love to see how these people think under pressure and how they deal with questions posed by Bitter Clingers and other assorted Useless Eaters.  O'Bama appears to have the teleprompter down pat.  I suspect he's not fleet of lip when its unscripted.  Hillary?  She's just Hillary.  Who knows what you'll get.

I can't say anything about his skills at debate, but I did hear a Republican who was formerly an economic adviser at the White House speaking at a Republican fund-raising event at the Columbia Club in Indianapolis.  He dealt with Obama more than a little in DC and he wouldn't say anything negative about him except that he strongly disagreed with his socialist position.  His opinion was that Obama was intelligent, honest and mostly honorable, if misguided when it came to policy.

I just thought it was interesting to hear someone coming from a strong Republican background, speaking to Republicans and refusing to put down one of the primary Democrat contenders.  Must be some of that "spittle flying character assassination" that Paddy sees so much of on the right ...
