Obama Wont Commit to Event at Military Base

A coalition of military groups is planning a nationally televised town-hall-style meeting with the presidential candidates near Fort Hood, Tex., the largest active-duty military installation in the country. But so far, only Senator John McCain of Arizona, the presumptive Republican nominee, has agreed to attend.

CBS has agreed to broadcast the meeting live from 9 to 11 p.m. Eastern time on Monday, Aug. 11. The candidates would face questions directly from an audience of 6,000 people, made up of veterans, service members and military families from the base.

Senator Barack Obama of Illinois, the presumptive Democratic nominee, has not agreed to participate.

Senator Obama strongly supports Americas veterans and military families and has worked hard on their behalf in the Senate, said Phillip Carter, director of Mr. Obamas veterans effort and an Iraq war veteran. While we unfortunately had a previously scheduled commitment on the date proposed, Senator Obama looks forward to continuing the dialogue hes been having throughout the country with veterans on how we can better serve our men and women in uniform as they serve us.

Carissa Picard, managing director of the Fort Hood Presidential Town Hall Consortium, said she had suggested Aug. 11 and asked the campaign to suggest other dates if that was not convenient, but after several conversations she had not been able to work anything out.

Im having extreme difficulty getting the Obama campaign to commit to this event, and we do not understand why, said Ms. Picard, whose husband is deployed in Iraq. We made it very clear to them that if they would commit to the event, we would work with them on dates.

The organizers released details about the event in hopes that it would pressure the Obama campaign to agree to the event.

This was a decision that was made with tremendous difficulty, to publicize it, Ms. Picard said. We were at a point where we had no other option. We got the impression that they could talk us to November.

The meeting would be at the Expo Center in Belton, Tex., about 25 miles from Fort Hood.

Translation:  "Obama is not about to attend an event where his fanny will be handed to him on a plate."

One imagines having an audience that isnt carefully vetted by the Obama team itself to produce exactly the right kind of people who are absolutely desperate for change and who are willing to ask absolutely any tough, searching question that the Obama team can write for them is not exactly something that Obama is looking for.  Didnt he back out of the proposed townhall debates for much the same reason?

Forget Obama.....this would be a prime opportunity for a McCain/Barr showdown. If McCain can earn his stripes with the Ft. Hood crowd, he might sway me...  cool

An empty suit can stand by itself if it is stiff enough. The addition of battle rattle would be too much weight upon its shoulders and cause it to fall.

If after taking Baghdad we made a sharp right and continued on we would not be in the position we find ourselves now. The British new that when they did it a long time ago. Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it! undecided

You mean we should invade a country that has as much of a chance of invading us as Andorra? How about instead of dropping the ball in Afghanistan and knocking off ten cent dictators we finish the job and put Osama's head on a pike. Iran isn't a threat, just another yippy dog on a short chain. Invading Iran only proves to the region that we are the great empire building satan of nations. They can't invade us anytime soon. The original idea was to make people that attacked us die in a hell of fiery shock and awe, not to invade petty little countries that don't even give us a tenth of our oil. We shouldn't have "taken" Baghdad, we were supposed to be liberating the country remember? I think we are now doing a good job with the current situation, but the whole invasion was a witch hunt. We put Saddam in power as our lapdog, and we had to put him down because he got off the chain.
