Title: US soldier sentenced to prison over Iraq killings
Post by: roo_ster on September 18, 2008, 04:03:36 AM
Looks like there is something to this one, unlike Haditha and a few other pseudo-crimes.

If they can prove it occurred, which looks increasingly likely, here's hoping for punishments commensurate with the crimes.

The sort of behavior described has no business in the US .mil.

VILSECK, Germany (AP) - A U.S. military judge says a soldier who pleaded guilty to involvement in the slaying of four bound and blindfolded Iraqis will be jailed for seven months and dishonorably discharged from the Army.

Spc. Belmor Ramos, 23, had faced a possible sentence of life in prison for conspiracy to commit murder but worked out a plea agreement.

He has agreed to testify against other soldiers alleged to be involved in the killing of the Iraqis whose bodies were dumped in a Baghdad canal.

Ramos confessed to standing guard as the prisoners were killed.

Judge Lt. Col. Edward O'Brien says he would have sentenced Ramos to 40-years in prison if he had not worked out the plea deal.

Three other soldiers in the unit were charged Tuesday with premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit premeditated murder and obstruction of justice.

Throw him in prison.

He's no better than a gangbanger.

Only seven months? Wow.

My thoughts as well.

Don't forget the dishonorable discharge.  That is no small taters, as it effects employment prospects.

Yep, that is the same thing as having a felony on your record.  I'm not sure if it has any bearing on gun rights, but is a definite obstacle to good employment

There is a question on the 4473 asking if you have ever been dishonorably discharged from the military. Answering yes, probably means no guns for you.

Nope. He's toast. Dishonorable Discharge = bad thing.

No gun rights, no voting, no gov't job, not even gov't contractor.

Pretty much the same thing as a felony conviction, sans civil court proceedings.

I've heard of McDonald's refusing applicants with DDs.
