Title: The Office of the President Elect
Post by: MechAg94 on November 25, 2008, 03:30:31 PM
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2008/11/25/despite-bells-whistles-office-president-elect-holds-authority/
I came across this image on Drudge and in the linked article.  I guess I don't remember any past President-Elects using placards like this as if they were assuming a temporary title and holding press conferences every time they announced a few new future appointments.  It could have been that I just didn't see it and the media didn't cover it like they are this time around.

I saw the picture before I looked at the article and was thinking that it seemed a bit arrogant and presumptive.  Maybe I am just predisposed to be negative about the guy.  I am curious what your impression is of the picture and Obama's pre-office activities in general.

Frankly, I was surprised he didn't use that placard during his debates with McCain.

Well, it doesn't make me feel any better about the next 4 years.

The guy just wants to gloat. Who is that somewhat plump and disturbing individual behind him?

I don't actually recall hearing the term "President elect" previous to this election.

Quite common term, been used forever AFAIK.  Office of however..  different story.

Right, I imagined that it had been around forever - I just don't recall hearing it prior to this election.

Probably because there was ambiguity while the lawsuits were flying around!

At least they aren't still using that classy faux Presidential seal unveiled during the campaign... Are they?

Is that pic ligit?

I'm no expert by any means, but the sign in question looks chopped.

How would one check?

I think that is his podium. Here is a pic from yahoo news.

...and another that shows it better. I think he is showboating with the podium.

Showboating is maybe a better term.  It just strikes me as strange in a leader.  It may not even been him.  It might just be some idiotic underlings.  It reflects on his personality and leadership though.  I am just trying to think of what it means for the next 4 years.  I think he is going to be a bit cocky starting out.  Not quite sure how that will play out.  Will he try to micromanage the economy and other stuff?

At first I thought it was a hoax. With all of those different photos, though, I guess it's not.

We're in for big trouble with this guy, bigger than I ever imagined.

No, I saw the conference live on CNN or some such, the sign was there. They've always called them "President Elect" before they officially took office but this is also the first time I'd heard of "The Office of..."

Can I get a big:  ;/ ?

Guys, do what I do. Every time I feel my BP going up, I take deep breaths. Four years of deep breathing: something to look forward to.

I saw the sign when Obama announced his economic adviser team.  The term is correct...  Thought it was definitely weird because I've never heard of an Office of the President Elect.  Upon a Google search, apparently no one else has either.

Interesting alternation to the Presidential Seal as well.

Dude is starting to make me pine for Hillary...  She was most definitely evil, but at least her ego didn't suck up all of the air in the room..

I don't either, Monkeyleg.  Scary stuff, isn't it?
(That said, I wonder if LBJ was similarly egotistical out of the public eye?  No evidence of such, just that I wonder...)

Yes.   Someone whom Obama is appearing to mirror quite closely...

He was. Anecdotes abound, but I can only pull a couple from the memory banks at the moment.

Lyndon was almighty pissed about Jack Kennedy's reputation as a cocksman. He said to one of his aides, (edited for possible underage readers) "What's so great about him? I've had more [strange] by accident than he's ever got!"

One day aboard Air Force One he said to a group of aides,"Churchill's dead...de Gaulle is old...who else is there?" (thumped his chest with both hands) "Now I am king!"

"Knights in White Satin"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9muzyOd4Lh8

Unfortunately(?) the clip is incomplete, at the end of the tune there's a little poem following that's in narrative form and it starts, "Breathe deep the gathering gloom..."

Found it:

Quote
Breathe deep the gathering gloom,
Watch lights fade from every room.
Bedsitter people look back and lament,
Another day's useless energy spent.
Impassioned lovers wrestle as one,
Lonely man cries for love and has none.
New mother picks up and suckles her son,
Senior citizens wish they were young.

and wouldn't you know it, right there at the top of the "related" list at Youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbWULu5_nXI&feature=related

I guess they're related because they've both been overplayed into suckdom.

'S funny, when I read 280's post and before I got to yours my mind was once again pondering the question, "Are people who habitually refer to themselves in the third person psychopaths?"

It's as though they're observers of their own life. If they're unable or unwilling to to refer to themselves as "I", what does that indicate about their level of consideration for the validity of anyone else's existence? Then again, they may just be self-important pr*cks.

Any thoughts on folks who have no problems referring to themselves in the first person, but who refer to other people in the third person?

Just looking at pictures in this thread and a few others in the media from the last few days, I gotta ask:  Is O'Bama shrinking?  He seems to be getting smaller as time advances.  Maybe I'm viewing too much into it.
