Title: Gran Torino
Post by: roo_ster on December 03, 2008, 03:10:24 PM
My grandpa owned two:

A 1971 with a 351 Cleveland and then a 1973 with a 302.

But, this isn't about autos, but the new Clint Eastwood flick coming out soon:

I'm hoping it's as good as the preview. The character reminds me of my late father-in-law.

I like most of Clint's work, so I reckon this will be a good one to watch.

This ought to be good...

I hope the Garand gets to speak. A lot.

Torinos I've known-
1968 GT Fastback, 302-2V, Light Beige  - Mmmmmmmm....
1972 Gran, 400 CI, Dark Green Metallic  -  Big Year for the Torino, went mainstream
1976 Brougham, 351W, Metallic Bronze  -  Torino's Last Year

Richard Petty drove a Torino, and I'd still love to restore a 1970 CJ.

Soakers, Ford Boy

Bought swmbo a brand spankin new '74 Gran Torino Brougham.  White on white on white.  The roof was a half padded white vinyl.  White guts.  Sweet car.

When does it start?
Website said it's playing in NY and LA but what about everywhere else?

Don't rightly know... all I know is, if you can legally watch it online in your area, do so. Fantastic movie, I'll be grabbing the DVD the day it comes out.

I still think this was the best acting he's done, period.

Australia was meh.  Better than most of what is out right now, and entertaining enough to keep you interested for 3 hours (yes, 3 hours!), but it was by no means spectacular.  Can't wait to see Gran Torino.  Saw the preview at Australia and my wife said "Oh God, that's going to be you in 40 years".

I think it comes out nationwide Jan 4th, but don't quote me.

A friend of my dad's had a '72 Gran Torino Sport, white hardtop and blue interior, 351 Cleveland, bought new in '72 and lovingly maintained. My dad bought it from him in '81. When I got out of the Army in '83 I made a deal with my dad to buy it for $1500, paying him $100 a month. Made two payments and then ran it up on a guardrail one night while out partying with friends. Insurance company called it a total loss and gave ol' dad $1300, getting me off the hook for the money. It was a sweet ride. I still kick myself in the ass once in a while for wrecking it.

Well if it is entertaining enough for 3 hours, I'd say it is a good movie. Although saying it is better than most of what is out right now, isn't saying much  =|  But I am looking forward now more to GranTorino. I'll just catch Australia in the next couple weeks and then Torino when it comes out. Besides, the family is going to be around for the holidays and Australia would be good to go see as a family. Rather, they would all agree to go see it.

Just came back from seeing this.  I now have a new favorite Eastwood movie.  It is NOT at all in the style of Dirty Harry so don't be expecting it.

Was Hugh Jackman's character actually using an 1895 Winchester lever action in part of Australia or not?

I saw tantalizing glimpses of what appeared to be an 1895.

Really? I saw it yesterday. It was a good movie. But you would put it above Unforgiven? Or any of the multitude of others? I would just say it was different and hard to make an apples to apples comparison due to the nature of it.

Yes.  One is used to kill a kangaroo on the run.

Saw the movie with SWMBO.

Australia is a three hour "meh." IMO.  Beats digging ditches & self-flagellation, though.

My dad bought a new '71 Torino GT w/ 351 Windsor, front bench seat, automatic on the column.  No biggie, I just considered it another old person's car.  My mom's '69 Impala Custom Coupe w/ 350 4bbl was much spicier, if a bit bigger.

Saw Gran Torino the other day.

Really good flick.  Maybe not "Unforgiven" level good, but still better than 90% of hte crap out there.

Someone described it as "Deathwish" with Clint.  I disagree.  I think it is closer to a wiser, retired Dirty Harry.

Anyway, well worth the price of admission.  Beats Australia all to hades.

That was me.  That's how they "hyped" it, and I saw it tonight with my wife.  I'm glad I was wrong; I really enjoyed it.  She cried at the end.

This is the first time in about 10 years I paid full price to see a movie and felt I got my money's worth.

So Gran Torino is good?  Try not to spoils it plox, still not playing here.

I saw a trailer for an interesting move on Hulu earlier, played before my feature.  Liam Neeson (I think that's him) in a movie called Taken.

Yes, go see Gran Torino.

As an added bonus, they blame it all on the Lutherans.

Gran Torino wasn't bad.  It's not Dirty Harry, but it does have decent weaponry.  If you want a mental preview, imagine a retired Mike Irwin living next to Hmong in a neighborhood falling victim to gang problems.  With a nice car.

That's a lot of suspended disbelief there, Rev.....

BTW, my wife & I are going to the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin this weekend, and we're trying to decide b/t Gran Torino and Defiance.  B/t the two, which is a better movie to see with the wife?....

You're right it's suspended belief.

When I'm retired, I'll be living in the middle of the high desert in New Mexico behind several layers of fencing and barbed wire, with a sign on the front gate that says "GO AWAY ALIVE OR GO AWAY DEAD, I DON'T CARE EITHER WAY"
