Title: Are there any other Christmas films?
Post by: Perd Hapley on December 24, 2008, 07:38:16 PM
I love It's a Wonderful Life.*  34th Street and Charlie Brown are good, too.

Other than that, I haven't found any good Christmas movies.  Some movies are funny, or good, but that doesn't make them Christmas movies.  And no, The Christmas Story and the National Lampoon thing don't count as real Christmas movies.

Are there any other real Christmas movies out there?

*I've heard a lot of people dogging It's a Wonderful Life.  Such people have no taste, and should never be allowed to discuss film in public.

Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer.  NEVER SEEN IT  :O

Surprised you haven't seen those...

The Polar Express.  NEVER SEEN IT

Polar Express is okay. Kiddo enjoys it. Some of her movies I'll watch when she isn't around because they are "that good".
Polar Express isn't one of them.

White Christmas is a classic.  Definitely on par with the others you like.  Danny Caye and Bing Crosby, with a musical score written by a famous Jew.  Christmas cheer at its finest.

The Abominable Snowman?  That was always my favorite Christmas movie as a kid.

Scrooged.  NO

White Christmas.  MAYBE - don't remember that one very well
- Post WWII feel good movie with Bing Crosby, Danny Caye, Marie (?) Clooney and another famous actress that I can't remember.

The Grinch Who Stole Christmas.  MAYBE - don't remember that one very well
-Animated.  Boris Karloff narrates and voices the Grinch who steals all of the Christmas gifts and decorations from all of the Whos in Whoville.  Kid oriented, but good.  "You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch."

Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer.  NEVER SEEN IT
- Animated, or claymation.  Rudolph's coming of age biography.  Funny scenes.

The Santa Clause.  Don't remember that one
- Tim Allen as a man who turns into Santa against his own will.

The Polar Express.  NEVER SEEN IT
- Animated.  Tom Hanks is the conductor on the Polar Express to the North Pole.  A handful of kids ride the train to see Santa and restore their Christmas spirit.

Die Hard.  Fun, but no
- Aw, come on.

I don't know what prissy little planet you're from, but we always watch A Christmas Story during Christmas.

It ain't an Easter or Thanksgiving flick, last I heard...

"Careful, kid, you'll shoot your eye out..."  =D

Yeah, there's definitely some Christmas-related stuff going on, but it - well, it just doesn't give me that happy, warm-and-fuzzy Christmas cozy feeling.  Which is not to say it's a bad movie.  It's just not a Christmas movie.

Mr. N. Field, I would have mentioned the Nativity movie, but I haven't seen that one.  Thanks for the recommendation.

As for all the rest of the claymation/animation stuff, I guess I just never wanted to sit down and watch those.  In fact, I find some of them downright creepy.  Anyway, summer was for television.  Winter was for sledding and hiking in the woods.

I actually watched Scrooged last night.  It was hilarious, and better than expected.  Still no IWL, I'm afraid.

Silent Night.    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0338434/

Based on a true story.

I like it also because I served in the 8th Infantry Division and did a terrain walk of the "Green Hell" of the Hurtgen Forest.

And thanks for recommending White Christmas, folks.  I saw part of that a long time ago.

Alright, alright, I'll come clean.  I'm griping, because I was hoping I could just snuggle up on the couch with lovey-face, and watch my favorite Christmas movie.  But since the tape is at Dad&Mom's house, no-go.  And we don't have the aforementioned Real Christmas Movies, so :(  Guess I'll watch it tomorrow.

Lay off The Christmas Story. It's as real a Christmas movie as any of them. I get all sorts of warm fuzzies from it that a sappy musical could never give.

I saw some of the Polar Express at my mom's the other day.
It was terrible.  I hate musicals.

Another vote for White Christmas.

Another good classic Christmas flick would be Christmas in Connecticut, if you've never seen it, it's great.  Barbara Stanwyck is teh hot..

How is "A Christmas Carol" not making this list?  Get the George C Scott version.  You can't beat General Patton as Ebineezer friggin Scrooge!  The Muppet version is really cute too...

So, what's the movie you wanted to see but can't??

There have been probably a half dozen versions of A Christmas Carol done that are good. I agree that George C. Scott did an excellent job.

Holiday Inn is another Bing Crosby flick that's a good Christmas movie.

The Homecoming: A Christmas Story is also quite good. Essentially the Waltons Christmas movie. Patricia Neal plays Olivia Walton.

No, it's not a Christmas movie.  I has spokened.

When did I ever endorse any sappy musical?  ???

What about "The Godfather," when Don Corleone is shot while Michael and Tom are out Christmas shopping? That always warms the cockles of my heart. ;)

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Not really a Christmas film, just always on at Christmas. Ian Fleming story, Roald Dahl adaptation, **** van **** in the lead. Doesn't get better.

White Christmas. You didn't endorse it outright, but you supported the endorsement.

You wanna make grand pronouncements, lay out the ground rules. What makes a Christmas movie? If the answer is "just my say so" then there is little point asking other people about the subject because mind reading isn't a common skill in our species.

I'm glad somebody finally nominated Holiday Inn. Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire -- great combination.

What about Laurel & Hardy's March of the Wooden Soldiers? It brought in scraps and tidbits from a raft of children's nursery tales, but it's loosely focused around Christmas, it has an eminently Scrooge-like character in it ... and it has a happy ending. What's not to like?

Toddler - quite the whippersnapper aren't you? I was ten when that came out.

Begging you pardon, I used the wrong term. I was 6 when it came out, so I guess toddler isn't quite right. :D
Still makes me a silly young whippersnapper though, I suppose.

For some reason, I've always thought that the STAR WARS and LORD OF THE RINGS movies are great Christmas movies....I guess because I always got SW toys for Christmas and watched the animated Hobbit movie as a kid....

If you really want the Christmas warm and fuzzies, you could turn off the idiot box and sing Christmas Carols or something like that. :)

It was a fairly clear night here.  My Dad and I took a few minutes to step outside and look around.  Saw a couple satellites and a meteorite that streaked for a couple seconds.
