Ever?

We have met the enemy and they are us!  (Walt Kelly's Pogo.)

What of Al Capp's Li'l Abner?  Gus Arriola's Gordo (Bug Rogers and Poosy Gato, where are you when we need you?)

Yep, IMNSHO.

I read Pogo when I was a boy, and read more of it, and about it, in archives as a young man, and love it. Read L'il Abner as a younker, too, and consider it a classic. Never heard of Gordo.

I'll take C & H.

And no, Waterson isn't creating new Calvin & Hobbs comics, unfortunately.

Bill Watterson is my best friend's first cousin!  Unfortunately this has never turned into an introduction for me, but my friend has been to his house and seen the hill that inspired Calvin and Hobbes' suicidal sled/wagon runs.

Bill Watterson is one of those few people that I have always, sincerely, wanted to meet.

After reading what little there is about him, I know that not only is it highly unlikely, it'd be rude.

If, Devonai, what you say is true, then please ask your friend to tell his cousin "Thanks" from a reader.  =)

Reading Watterson's last book, his "thesis" for lack of a better word, was an incredibly shocking eye opener to me.

I was left with one overriding mental image of the man -- profoundly depressed, bitter, and just nasty as hell.

i thought one of the main reasons he quit was because people kept using his images unlicenced (like calvin peeing) and it ticked him off.

"Do tell."

It's been awhile since I read that book, but it's a collected series of cartoons with his commentary between the strips.

A good portion of it was his recounting his protracted battles with editors and others who tried to compartmentalize his strip. While I certainly understand the desire to remain true to what he obviously considers an art form (he's not alone in that), a lot of it comes across as overwrought, bitter, and antagonistic. At least it did to me.

That's the one.

In all fairness I should reread it. Maybe I was in the wrong place at the time to fully absorb it.

i just re-read the begining speil and the bit about licinsing and i think you may have pegged him pretty good from memory.

Second best is Bloom County

Third is Far Side

Fourth is Doonsbury, or however it's spelled.

Fifth was Peanuts.

Honorable mention to Liberty Meadows.

Few historians know of the heartwarming friendship between French Reformation theologian John Calvin and English political philosopher Thomas Hobbes, the latter of whom may or may not have been real, considering he was not even born yet.

My physics professor last semester put a C&H strip on the cover sheet of each exam. He was a terrible teacher, and his exams were horrible, but at least there was a little something fun associated with the class.

one of my english teachers used to make us write 'journal' entrys based on a topic. one was a C&H, with calvin outside at night. "HEY!....screamed the dustspeck."
its been one of my favorites ever since.

i like the Non Sequiturs with Lucy and Danae. i have the book and i stole the picture of Lucy and Danae chillin' in the liverpool with the jumper flying over. one of my favorite straight comic images.

Except none of the other three people in that analogy are nearly as much of a pretentious jerk as Waterson.

Edit: oops, forgot where I was. Sorry about that.
