Attn computer gurus:
I need to open a file I was sent (actually my wife, for her business).  Its in a .wpd format, what program/format is this, and what program do I need to use to open it?

It's a Wordperfect file. If you don't have Wordperfect you might be able to open it with MSWord (though the conversion will mess up the formatting). If you don't have access to either of those try OpenOffice.org. I think Open Office will open Wordperfect files.

IIRC -

Probably  Corel Wordperfect.

See if the sender will  
convert  to
..doc format, at least those can be opened in Wordpad.

I believe Star Office, a free office suite, will open wordperfect files.

Most later versions of MS Word should open it just fine.

If the conversion add-ons have been installed (which Microsoft conveniently does not do in most cases). The necessary files are on your MS Word (Office) install cd, in case Word asks for them.

IMHO, MS Word may be universally accepted for word processing but WordPerfect is still light-years ahead in intuitive operation and easy-to-understand user interfaces.

I think Word Perfect (.wpd) is used mainly by lawyer-critters and their minions.

openoffice.org ought to open the document.

Medical and legal offices still use WordPerfect a lot because of the the Stedman's add-in dictionary and thesaurus functions that are profession-specific.

Wordperfect used to be pushed really hard on the legal community.  We (and many of our minions) quit using it a long time ago.  I still occasionally get Wordperfect docs from other lawyers, but they open fine with Word.  My only real gripe is that it leaves hard returns at the end of each line in the converted document.
