The mayor's looking out for us here. He sent some guy around this afternoon to leave a Swine Flu Alert on all our doors, reminding us that our tiny little city (Edmundson, MO) has a Pandemic Emergency Plan. On one side there are tips on how to deal with The Swine Flu Pandemic. !!! On the other side are little cartoon drawings explaining how to cover our coughs, and wash our hands.
I feel so much safer now.
Should I return it to the mayor's office, explaining that I already know how to wash my hands? Suggestions, please.

Takes our mind off the economy and all the other stuff they're screwing up! This crap's so mild here that the advice is "stay home, don't go to work!"
Vit c 1000mg/ day and zinc 50mg/day, but I'm not a Dr. and that advice is worth exactly what you paid for it!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey - at least he's trying to take care of his flock - errrrr - I mean the good citizens of your town. Cut him some slack already. The sheep - uhhhh - I mean the citizens need to be kept aware of all the frightening things in the world that can harm them and only the government can protect them from.
THAT SAID:
Covering your mouth when you cough is almost as bad as not covering it at all. Germs just move from your mouth/lungs to your hands. Everything you touch (like handrails on stairs for example) for the next 2+ hours becomes contaminated for further transfer.
Instead competent medical authorities recommend coughing into a tissue (not handkerchief). Said tissue gets immediately tossed. Absent a tissue using your sleeve (or lacking a sleeve your forearm) is recommended because the germs can't be as easily transferred and don't live long on a sleeve.
Common sense really.

Not a function of keeping the germs. Covering your mouth with your hands moves the germs to your hands.
Everything you touch after that becomes contaminated.
Coughing into your hands guarantees you're doing your part to spread the germs to your fellows.

Apparently I am supposed to scrub for 20 seconds and be sure to get my fingernails, then use a towel to turn off the water.
I feel bad, my first thoughts were: What am I, a doctor prepping for surgery, 20 seconds, yeesh.
I will quite obviously soon be a highly effective vector. The flu vics were just down the street from me.
Oh, and I use hankerchiefs.
Luckily my immune system is probably weakend from the high stress of finals and an extremely poor diet.

I was agreeing with you. And adding a bit of the ridiculous. Coughing is done to expel certain undesirable elements from the body. Covering the cough with a hand, as you mentioned, simply puts those undesirable elements on your hands. Since people tend to rub their own eyes and noses, covering a cough with your hand does yourself a disservice. You put back what your lungs wanted taken out.

The only thing my school did was send out this crappy email:
You may have heard about the outbreak of the swine flu (influenza) in
Mexico and in some parts of the U.S. The people currently most at
risk are those who have traveled recently to infected areas. The
health and well-being of our students, faculty and staff is our
utmost concern. There have not been any cases of the flu on our
campus and no confirmed cases of swine flu in Eastern Oregon. EOU is
closely monitoring the situation with local health officials.
Swine Influenza (Flu)
Public health officials in Oregon are stepping up surveillance for a
new strain of influenza known as swine flu, after cases were
confirmed in California, Texas and Mexico.
Here in Oregon, the flu season has been winding down and there have
been no known cases of the swine flu. While there is no need to be
overly concerned at this point, to help prevent an outbreak, students,
faculty and staff are encouraged to take the precautions they would
normally take to prevent colds or flu:
o Wash your hands often with soap and water (Alcohol-based hand
cleaners are also effective).
o Try to avoid touching your, eyes, nose or mouth.
o Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
o Don't share drinks, toothbrushes, etc.
Cover your mouth with something other than your hand when you cough,
If you are sick, go see your doctor but otherwise try not to go out
and expose others to your illness.
Symptoms
Symptoms of the flu usually include a high fever (102-104 degrees),
chest discomfort/cough, body aches, headache and/or exhaustion.
Usually, people can pinpoint exactly when their symptoms started, and
they start suddenly -- "I was fine at 10, but by 10:30 I was really
sick." Stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat and other symptoms of the
common cold are usually not prominent. Illness caused by this new
strain of flu has the same symptoms as illness caused by other
strains of flu including fever, lethargy, lack of appetite, coughing,
runny nose, sore throat, and can include nausea, vomiting and
diarrhea.
Precautions
Influenza is spread just like the common cold - through droplets in
the air and from direct contact with individuals with the virus.
Touching surfaces that have been contaminated by someone who has a
virus and then touching their eyes, nose, or mouth increases the
chance of acquiring the virus.
"When outbreaks happen it can cause anxiety," said Kohn. "The
antidote for that is good information - and good public health
practice. As we get more information about this new strain of flu we
will be working with our partners across the country and at the
Centers for Disease Control to address this issue."
Background on swine flu
Swine influenza is a respiratory illness related to seasonal
influenza. Swine flu is commonly seen in pigs, although occasionally
human infections also occur. The most common route of exposure for
humans is through contact with pigs, however none of the ill people
are known to have had such contact or link to people who do. Those
who had swine flu in the U.S. thus far have experienced mild illness,
and have recovered. US hospitals have not reported an increase in
serious respiratory illness. All cases were detected through routine
surveillance for seasonal influenza.
Although this new strain of flu is called "swine flu," you do not
have to have physical contact with pigs to get infected, and you do
not get swine flu from eating pork or pork products. Regular flu
vaccines do not generally protect against swine flu.

What to do
If you are having symptoms consistent with the flu, see the Student
Health Center, or visit your primary care provider.
If you feel sick, stay home and see your physician. Students should

Sounds like they hired their tech monkeys from the same place our school did. It's pretty sad when your CS/multimedia students are trained better than the "professionals" in the IT department.

You're lucky, then. Being a CS/MM student myself, going to my university's web page and using it's email usually induces head-banging moments.
Luckily, our email is going over to Google Apps, so maybe it won't be so bad in the near future.

My school has swine flu.
They have a classmate of mine confined.
Notice have been sent out via the school email telling anyone with symptons to report to a doctor or not leave their home for a week to avoid infecting others.
