Title: I absolutely loathe Windows Vista.
Post by: RocketMan on July 07, 2009, 01:19:46 AM
I absolutely loathe Windows Vista.
That is all.

eta: I'm just blowing off steam.
I am working on a client's laptop, trying to fix an IE 8 problem.  Vista makes every task, even the ones most simple in XP, quadruply redundantly difficult.

It's a personality clash, or so I've been told.

Ah, hell, I didn't think of that.  Where's my Linux uber alles comment deflector...?

You know, I've still yet to use vista for anything.  Well, okay, I think I opened powerpoint on a vista machine once.   =D  Vista is my one lesson learned from the mistakes of others.

I've got Vista on my laptop.  Not as bad as I feared, but not that great, either.  The only reason I haven't replaced it with XP is that I only have one license that is already in use on this computer, and I'm too cheap to buy another one.

One of these days I might put Ubuntu on it.  Maybe.

I have Vista on one of my laptops, and honestly, it works great.  I don't know what the hubbub is about.

I have a brand-new Gateway Core2Duo desktop machine with factory installed Vista.

The computer is surplus to me, and I've even entertained the idea of wiping the hard drive and installing XP Pro for whoever wants it.

What's Vista doing that makes it more difficult?

I've used it, don't dislike it. In fact found one or two things useful enough to seek out their compiz equivalents. I've not tinkered with it though.

I have been runing PCs since 1984 or so and Vista seems quite good at hiding the bits that I want to noodle.

Am I the only person on the face of the planet who hasn't had any troubles with Vista? I've been using it for years, and I've had fewer problems than I've had with XP. I must not be doing something right...

That's probably what I'm going to do with the 'puter my mother bought. Vista hogs up the memory and I have to keep cleaning things up to keep it running.

I started using VISTA after my previous PC died. At first, there was a problem with hardware compatibility, because drivers were not available. That problem went away after a few months. The next biggest problem was software incompatibility. Some software companies decided they would not support VISTA, and made no attempt to correct malfunctions caused by the programs making use of unsupported "features" of the old XP system. The third issue was the heavy handed "protection" that MicroSoft decided to cram down the throat of the users. Far to many security related pop up boxes. Most of the security stuff could be bypassed with a bit of snooping and setting some parameters in the system.

VISTA does have some very good features that are user oriented, but the aggravation that most people have with the system counteracts the benefits. It has a steeper learning curve than most people are comfortable with. At first I hated it, but after a couple of years I would not want to go back to XP.

I will take a wait and see approach to the new operating system they are developing. It normally takes about a year after release to the public before MicroSoft gets the worst of the bugs out.

Vista worked alright for me, but Windows 7 is what Vista should have been. I've been running 7 since the release candidate came out, and it's a vast improvement in speed and stability for me. The annoying UAC messages are much less frequent, and can be easily tuned to rarely or not come up at all if that's what one wishes.

Marnoot, I'll definitely agree with you there.  Windows 7 (at least the beta version I'm using) is nowhere near the resource hog that Vista has become.

I don't know what the hubbub is about.

Having no experience with Vista, my theory is that it failed to offer the Windows Classic theme, which made a lot of geeks very cranky.  Windows 7 then, should prove to be just Vista with the Classic theme available.

Why don't the size tags work?

Vista does have a "windows classic" theme. ;)

Oh, by the way, I'm not so lightweight anymore.  I had to take my belt out a notch the other day.   =|

Nope.  Same here.

We have a mix of Vista and XP Pro.  We had a couple of older programs that took a little effort to get running under Vista, but on reasonably current hardware with enough memory, I prefer it.  I still use XP on some of my older home PCs, but don't plan on sticking with it when I replace them.

I've tried to use Linux a number of times over the past 10 years, but never been satisfied with it.  My brother and others I know say they like it, but spend hours a day tinkering with it.  If I had that much free time to make it work like I wanted, I'd be doing something else.  Linux still seems like more of a hobby than an OS.

The problem is that too many Vista systems were shipped without the appropriate hardware support (driver and capability).  Now that you can get a Vista system appropriate for the OS, fewer complaints are being levied.  The damage was done, however.

I have heard good and bad about Vista. I use XP and Microsoft was really pushing the Vista as an upgrade. It would have barely worked on my computer memory wise. Many folks have had problems upgrading their XP to Vista as their machine running XP was inadequate.

I will wait at least a year before I get Windows 7 on a new computer. They can work the bugs out before I buy it.

Ahhhh, Windows Vista... the Windows ME of the NT line....

Having quite a bit with Vista, I've found that the hardware support frankly sucks for anything more than a few years old, the software support reeks as well (No 16-bit VM support, so if you used any really old programs, you have virtually no options.

But that's not the problem most folks have with it.  The interface and how everything seems to work has changed drastically from XP/2000/etc, unless you set it to classic.

Search frankly sucks.

Microsoft's Virtual PC VM software (while free) is craptastic compared to VMWare, but if you use old apps or games, it's pretty much the only game in town.
(VMWare still isn't nearly as fast as it should be, but it allows old Windows apps to be run unlike DOSBox,)

And those gahdamn security popups "You're about to run xxx.exe.. Allow / Deny?"

Sure, you can turn most of that stuff off, but I've always been a firm believer in OSes that do their job and stay the hell out of the way of their users, not constantly bombard them with useless crap warnings (which in theory should help keep your machine more secure, but in practice don't seem to work that well,)

And like ME, I expect Vista will quietly fade away while Windows 7 becomes the OS Vista really should have been.

Vista is a hardware hog, and that's probably the main reason why folks upgrading from XP to Vista have a bad experience.

You can mitigate the problem somewhat by turning off Vista's bells and whistles, and Microsoft addressed the issue by streamlining the Windows 7 code for better efficiency.

I like Windows 7, but feel no need to migrate until XP is no longer viable.

Yeah, because Unix doesn't deny access or force you to use "sudo" when you try to access an application as a regular user.

People complained because Windows wasn't secure enough.  Now that they're trying to make it secure, people complain because it's too secure.

Phyphor, I agree with you on both of the above statements, 100%.  I believe Microsoft was needing more money and the OS wasn't there yet so they released it as Vista and then finished it as Win 7.  I have heard Vista called Microsoft's Edsel.  Remember an even version number of an MS product is not as good as an odd version number.

Fistful,

Win XP is good as was W2K and if you look at the the version numbering derived from the upcoming release Windows 7.  Vista would be version 6 and XP would be version 5.1 and Windows 200 is version 5.

True.

There is a lot more in common between Win2K and XP than XP and Vista.

Often times, if I cannot find a given device or hardware driver in XP, the Win2K version works just fine.
