Title: Sugar-free homemade hard candy recipe?
Post by: mtnbkr on December 11, 2005, 12:43:45 PM
My wife likes to make hard candy this time of year, but with several diabetics in the family, she'd like to find a recipe that doesn't rely on so much sugar.  Does anyone know of a recipe that isn't based around a premixed kit?  I could've sworn I saw a non-sugar ingredient to replace the corn syrup she normally uses, but I can't find anything online.

Thanks,
Chris

Has she tried using Splenda?

Not yet.  I don't think Splenda will melt and form the "body" of the candy as well as corn syrup.  The "sweet" part is taken care of via the assortment of artificial sweetners on the market.  What we can't seem to replace is the corn syrup/sugar mix that creates the actual "candy".

How about just keeping a dispenser of insulin needles next to the candy jar on the buffet?

JK!!!Just a joke!!Bad taste!!Bad dog!Sit!!

Seriously though,I just made two batches of hard candy myself(orange & lemon)2.25 cups sugar,.5 cup corn syrup,&.5 cup water.I can see where it could be a problem.A sugar substitute that doesn't leave a crappy aftertaste would be welcome.

Making candy with no sugar is like serving a hamburger with no meat

Yeah, I know, but we're trying to be considerate of our T2 Diabetic relatives.

It's a crime to make hard candy without sugar.  Speaking of hard candy, anyone know where to get the flavorings online?  The local store here has a very limited amount.

I googled "diabetic hard candy".  Topic screen popped up, 3rd topic down, "Diet Food Low Carbohydrate....."  Click on this.  Seems like a lot of info may be available.

Premade candy is easy to find.  Kits that have everything you need are easy to find.  Ingredients so you can make your own is where we have problems.

You've had problems for as long as I've known you. Your primary one seems to be a passive/VERY aggressive daughter...

I'm really surprised that there aren't any hard candy recipes out there...

I just e-mailed the makers of Splenda to see if they have anything. I'll let you know.
