Title: worst car name
Post by: griz on August 05, 2009, 08:57:44 AM
I saw one of these the other day.  Nothing against the concept, I even like the idea of a light duty vehicle with a pickup bed.  But when you have a Dodge Omni with the trunk chopped off why in the world would you name it Rampage?

Actually I think it was built upon the mid 1980's Charger/Duster chasis, not the Omni platform.

Because you already have a Chihuahua named Fang or Killer?

Yup.  Based on the 2.2L FWD Dodge Charger/Plymouth Duster chassis, which shared driveline duties with the Omni/Horizon platform. In fact, they were called Omni 024 and Horizon TC3 before getting their Charger/Duster names.

The pickups were called Dodge Rampage/Plymouth Scamp, the Rampage being a play on Dodge's Ram series of trucks.

I haven't seen one in years, and those that I did see were rust buckets.  I'm holding out for a nice example of the Rampage's competition, the VW (Rabbit) pickup.

Worst car name?

Gremlin.

Whoever thought to name a car after a poltergeist-type spirit that WW II aircrews blamed for engine problems was just frigging brilliant.

I hear Ford is coming out with a new car model in honor of President Obama.

The Ford Fister...

I still wonder which genius decided to name a car company KIA. Don't they know that's a military acronym for "killed in action"? Doesn't give me warm and fuzzy feelings about the brand.

Then there's the Ford Aspire. What's it aspiring to be, a Crown Vic?

  I can't believe I didn't realize that!  Thanks.

I just thought of another name that bothers me.  The Nissan Armada.  It is admittedly as big as a ship, but each one is still only a single vehicle, not a fleet.

Leave your manparts at home....

I have a Nissan Sentra that I'm thinking of taking a "sawzall" to and making a 2 wheel drive "Brat" out of.

Every time I see a Honda Fit I think F-it, especially given the logo. I was like why would they call a car "F-it"?

Thirty years ago a car magazine gave a scathing review to the Chevrolet Chevette and said it was no wonder they called the car the shove-it.

Friends of mine had a Chevette.

It replaced a Chevy Vega.

Talk about piss poor choices!

And where would you put an exhaust pipe on an electric car?...  =|

It doesn't matter, just so it has one. (Some jurisdictions require tailpipe emission checks during annual license renewal. No tailpipe = no tailpipe emissions check = no license.)

That is all.

I agree with xf.  Probe is probably the worst.  Hummer shouldn't be far behind.

Nobody can forget the spontaneous combustable...  The Pinto!  Like it runs on Mexican food or methane.

Yugo... Real slow.

Matrix.  What's next, Quadratic Equation?

Neon.  If it were in any way a flashy car, sure.  But it's not.

Th big ol' advertisements that dealers splash across the spare tire covers of the latter really help with the name.

Nothing like driving around an ad for "Jim Riehl's Friendly Hummer"

Someone around here has been driving a mint-condition one for years.  I'd love to have it just for its uniqueness.

Friends of mine had a Chevette.

My best friend had one.  It was a three speed manual, and the car I learned to drive a stick on.  Knock it if you want, but you could tell your friends you had a 'vette,  and it cost only $3,995 new!

Did yours have an actual tachometer or did it just have the little dash lights with up and down arrows that told you when to shift?

That one had the dash light.   =D  That was a common '80s fuel-economy feature (and an annoying one at that, much like the highlighted "55" on the speedo).

If it does what it says it will, I'll buy it and repaint it in jungle camo.

(HINT:  I doubt it can do all this crap, and be affordable.)

Is it me, or does the "Leaf" and the Honda "Insight" look like the Prius?

Guess people gotta have that look so they can show everybody how "Green" they are...

When you're trying to beat a drag coefficient of 0.21, it's hard to beat an ovoid.  If you don't mind the aerodynamics of a cinder block, any old Ford with fins will do the job.

Worst name is definitely Gremlin.  And they are ugly, which is why I want one.  And Golf, since absolutely nothing about it even hinted about the sport.   And I got behind a Smartcar today.  I won't pay double the cost of a Civic to get a tiny carbeurated motor.

Chevy Citation. A high school friend bought one after he graduated. I was at another friend's house and he showed up (w/o the car) anc told us he just got a citation. It was and automobile version of "Who's on first".

Us: How fast were you going?

Him: Why does that matter?

Us: How much is it gonna cost?

Him: $3000.

Us: Holy crap! How fast were you going?

Him: Not fast. It's just a Citation.

Us: For $3000?!

Him: Yeah. That's not bad.

Us: That's a lot of money!

This went on for about 10 minutes until he figured out we didn't know Chevy made a car called a Citation and obviously thought he got a $3000 traffic ticket.
