Title: Thousands leave AARP for conservative ASA
Post by: Silver Bullet on August 18, 2009, 11:58:58 PM
According to this article

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/08/18/aarp-losing-members-health-care-faces-challenge-grassroots-senior-advocacy/ (http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/08/18/aarp-losing-members-health-care-faces-challenge-grassroots-senior-advocacy/)

AARP is losing thousands of members over their recent barry-licking policies.

From that article:

Quote
About 60,000 seniors have quit AARP since July 1 due to the group's support for health care reform, a spokesman for the organization said this week.

Folks are joining up with the much more conservative American Seniors Association, (ASA)

located here

ASA even has a special offer now:

That ought to put the fear of God into them, losing 60,000 of their 40 million members.  Take that, AARP!  =D

Go Granny, go! =D

Just kidding. 60K is a good start.

60k in a month doesn't seem like much. Doesn't about 1/6 of the population belong to AARP?

Now if it were six million, we'd be celebrating.  =D

AARP has come out on occasion as anti-gun, IIRC.

AARP gives free membership to the spouse of any member.  Most recent statistic I saw for paying members was 24 million, about 5-10 years ago.  The membership fee is like thirteen bucks per year and is a loss leader to sell insurance and other crap to old folks.

Thought they flew their victim-disarmament flag proudly, myself... =|

Dropped my AARP membership over a year ago, told 'em it was because of they're anti-gun politics. Still get mail. Now I know what to do with it. Most people, including me, didn't know there was a choice! So pass it on!

I get AARP mail/email all the time, and I'm 21. Even got an AARP card that I show to people for the hell of it.

Never will send them a dime, though.

Anyone know what ASA's stand on guns is?  AARP is very anti-gun.

I couldn't find anything on ASA's web site about their RKBA position.

I checked the NRA's blacklist

http://www.nraila.org/Issues/FactSheets/Read.aspx?ID=15 (http://www.nraila.org/Issues/FactSheets/Read.aspx?ID=15)

and ASA does not appear on the list.  AARP is easy to find on the list, though.

If you look down the list to corporate sponsors of anti-RKBA, you'll see why I never buy Levi's (or Dockers) or Sara Lee's.

Remember, half of them are aged hippies--they can remember Woodstock, especially the ones who weren't there--but they don't remember that they are senior citizens.  And not paying their dues is like stickin' it to The Man!

AARP loses about 400,000 members per month just due to normal attrition (death).  60K is nothing.

That number sounds high per month...maybe per year?

Yes it does seem high. I'm guessing it's because he attributed the entirety of the loss to death.

SOME of that 400K is death. The vast majority of it is likely individuals who failed to renew their membership. (Late, Forgot about it, etc...)

AARP has about 35 million members. They expect to gain far more as the baby boomers start retiring.

Probably.  I made the mistake of quoting someone else.  Time to check some numbers myself.
