Title: Two things that are radically changing my life...
Post by: Felonious Monk/Fignozzle on December 19, 2005, 01:15:36 PM
I've come up for air for the first time in 3 days from a new "thang" I discovered on the internet.
Nope, not a girlfriend.
Sorry, I can barely handle the one woman I have, and I'll have to answer to Her Heavenly Father, besides. Wink

It's Stumble Upon.
You put in your preferences with regards to topics and subtopics, and it takes you to websites that other members (free, but email addy is required) have rated highly within the topic.

OMG.  This thing is SO addictive.  It's the crack cocaine of websurfing.
Hello.  My name is Fig, and I'm an addict.  SU Anonymous, PLEASE HELP ME!!!!
Don't say you weren't warned.

...oh, and the second?
It's the music of Orthodox Hassidic reggae rapper Matisyahu.
As silly as that sounds, the guy has got game.

I HATE rap music.
I LOVE reggae.
His rap is more of a Jamaican dancehall thing than what I'd call rap, but the fire this guy has...the talent...
is nothing short of phenomenal.

Mark my words, when a 44 year old Christian white guy jumps on a bandwagon like his, somethin' GOTTA be happenin'!

He's got as deep and stankin' a groove as Bob Marley, as deeply schooled in roots reggae as Mark Mohr and Christafari, and an intense delivery that only Damian Marley can match among current artists.

amazing.

Fascinating. Damn. Really good music, but he's on Sony. I don't trust them enough to buy music from them, after that last stunt they pulled.

He is an interesting character.  He spent the last Shavuous at our synagogue.  Very quiet.

More, from Wikipedia:
Matthew Miller (born June 30, 1979, West Chester, Pennsylvania), more commonly known as Matisyahu, is a Hasidic Jewish reggae artist.

He is a member of the Lubavitch Hasidic Community in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, New York; a community made famous by its leader, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson. Matisyahu was not brought up as an Orthodox Jew, however he turned to Orthodox Judaism around 2001 and began playing with the Jewish band Pey Dalid. He counts among his musical inspirations Bob Marley, Phish, and Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach. His fans are of different walks of life, religions, and ethnicities. He sometimes performs with Kenny Muhammad, a Muslim beatboxer.

His reggae vocal style is along the lines of traditional Rasta Roots stylings mixed with dub sound. The easiest comparison would be similar to the conscious and cultural sides of Buju Banton, Sizzla, Capleton, or Junior Kelly, but with the upbeat message of Luciano, Bushman and Everton Blender, and vocal dexterity of Barrington Levy. The production of the tracks draws from King Tubby, Augustus Pablo, Mikey Dread, and Linval Thompson. Similarities to the Foundation Sound of the late 1970s and 1980s would be accurate, and comparisons to Morgan Heritage likewise, would not be wrong. However, he mixes in contemporary stylings of rap and beatboxing, similar to Sublime, as well as the traditional Hazzan style of Jewish cantors and Hasidic nigunim.

That stumbleupon is neat. I already found a couple of links I want to check out later. I will be spending some time there.

Fig - that Stumble upon wants to it seems install it's own toolbar - are you quite happy this is not adding something you don't want.  Data mining etc.

I am just mega suspicious!!

Chris,
It may be adding something BESIDES the toolbar.  I was okay w/the toolbar ALONE, but I've spent a couple of hours now cleaning up some scumware, so I *hope* it was just coincidence, since I had to do a couple of forms and such in IE last night.

I've got pretty good protection set up, between Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, Hijack This, and MS Anti-Spyware on top of Norton 2005, and I keep them all updated.

In retrospect, it might be more likely to have caught the cyber-crabs from one of the sites, rather than the app itself.

Stumble Upon is a killer app-- I do hope they didn't load it with crap.  I'll keep you posted.

Thx for feedback - well I got as far as signing up but my download manager pulled down the .exe - and that is where I will leave it for now.  Not installed.

I have plenty of protection too, all kept current but - just not sure.  I seem to recall the Google toolbar was not exactly squeeky clean - so am thinking of that I guess.

Sounds more than useful - but yeah - do keep me posted, hoping of course you don't have problems - sounds great in essence.

Fig - I forgot to add, I've found a "defining" album recently as well. "Crimson" by the Alkaline Trio. The lyrics have made me realize a lot of things about life and my life in particular. It is a little dark but check it out if you get the chance.

Matisyahu is quite something, but am I only one who sees "Weird" Al Yankovic popping up and chiming in?  Smiley

I didn't download and install their software. I just did some random searches in the box on their website. That's as far as I'm going for now. Especially since I won't use IE anyhow.

Well, I bought the "Matisyahu" CD.  Maybe I need to see him in person, but I wasn't blown away like Fig was.  What surprised me wasn't the Jewish ideas he brought to reggae, but by how Jewish many Rastafarian ideas are.

Not bad, though-I'll burn it and return it.

Antibubba,

How so, oh...can I say it?  Dare I? Tongue I only wish now that I had a command of the vernacular of Israel.  The language is so seminaly descriptive.  I'm having an awesome chuckle at the moment and have no way to express why it is so proper to do so.
I do know it involves many sshhsskkshhing noises. Tongue

Well, Grampster, I admit that his music is probably much like much of the mysticism of Chasidism; that is, there are layers and layers.  And I will say his beatbox skills are primo.  I'll listen to it again, of course, and I'll take away more each time.  I guess I expected to be grabbed, in the way most Semitic and Middle Eastern music does for me.  Or like the Beastie Boys Wink

So I guess I'll share some of what I'm listening to:  Amon Tobin.  He's on Ninjatunes   http://ninjatune.net   He does a lot of sampling mixed with some found sound, but he does it with such complexity and grace-jazz, dance hall, rock, electronic-it's beautiful and mesmerizing.

And if you want to laugh out loud, on the same label is Kid Koala.

280plus, once you've heard Polish reggae nothing will surprise you anymore.

Installed stumbleupon on my computer at home.  Is there any way to minimize or get rid of the stupid tool bar?

I'm a purist.  I hate software that installs additional bars.

grrrr.
