Title: Hunting on Travel Channel
Post by: mtnbkr on October 05, 2009, 07:29:38 PM
I'm watching Andrew Zimmern's Bizarre World.  They just showed him shooting an impala in South Africa.  On another show if his, Bizarre Food, he shot a javalina, which they ate on the show.

At the moment, he's at a Carnivore Restaurant in SA. :D

I remember seeing one episode in which he was in Iceland, and he went puffin hunting with some locals.  They use what look like fishing nets on long poles and snag the birds right out of the air.  Pretty cool looking.  One of the decent shows on TV.

Yes, that's the guy who will eat anything and yes, this is his new show.

I was surprised they showed him shooting game twice on TV.  He seems to be a reasonably competent shot (scoped rifles and somewhat short distances, but he's calm and makes it happen) and not prone to guilt over killing an animal for food.

I recall the puffin episode as well.

My wife and I joke that every episode of Bizarre Foods had him eating testicles or eyeballs at least once per show.

Is this the sorta-chunky guy who travels all over and, well, eats any odd thing that he passes by?  A happy, genial fellow?

There is another guy kinda like that who does similar things, but is also an ass.

Yes, this guy.  He seems to be a genuinely nice guy, treats everyone with respect, even if they're a bit "off".

I saw the Iceland show too. He also ate some kind of medieval mixture of congealed blood and fat...I think it was called blood pudding...eeeeeh....

He eats blood pudding frequently on the show.  Actually, he seems to like blood-based dishes.

My favorite episode was the Appalachian one.  Not particularly gnarly, but took place in areas and with people that remind me of home.

A generation or two back, the guy would be a circus geek - you know, the character who'd eat literally anything.

I'll check out the show again, but as soon as he starts in on eyeballs, fried Mopane worms, or the Indian feast from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom . . . I'm switching channels.

There was one thing he wouldn't eat past the first bite, but I do not recall what it was.

It was some kind of fruit that when opened gave a rancid smell.  I remember that episode, too.   =D

Actually, I think he ate that one.  It was another fruit that had a texture he couldn't tolerate.  IIRC, the flavor and scent were ok, it was merely the texture.  I think it was the Puerto Rico episode.

My Grandpa Waldo's favorite dish!

He was such a blood pudding fan, he made sure to catch every drop when slicing the critter's throat.

Nah, he just relished the odder bits of the beasts on the farm.

When I saw the old Far Side comic with the old indian holding up this little squiggly thing in front of hte young indians while he said, "This is the only part of the buffalo we don;t use," I was reminded of Grandpa Waldo.

I''ve seen him turn green a few times. =D

One was the show he did in Morocco.  He was eating some "fermented" (spoiled) meat concoction that was traditionally prepared with scrambled eggs.  After the first bite, you could see him doing his best to hold it down.  The second was too much for him though...lol.

Another was a show he did on the gulf coast.  He was eating deep fried shad roe and was sitting at a table with some 70-80 year old southern belles.  He managed to down 2 bites of that too, but he was struggling.  The bluehairs were tearin' it up and looking at him like "bless his heart"...

This disgusting food scenes I can deal with.

What drives me up a wall when trying to watch that show is the constant lip smacking.

Dude, you're not a cow, CHEW WITH YOUR MOUTH CLOSED.
