But, one has to wonder: Why would self-avowed commies invade Michigan?  Doesn't it already have a commie gov't?

Or, maybe it is to inject a little capitalism into the place...

I'm pretty sure it still a western setting. They just used Michigan for the cheap filming etc.

RATM does not know what they want.  ;/ The musical version of a Che shirt.

Despite their "indie" cred, they survive off of the capitalist music biz just like the most cravenly commercial pop artists do. And China is more into their "post-communist robber baron oligarchy phase" every passing year.

All true.  Doesn't mean they won't cheer on the commies.
