Sarah Palin takes Fox News commentator job

By RACHEL D'ORO, Associated Press Writer Rachel D'oro, Associated Press Writer – 21 mins ago

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Sarah Palin, former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate, will return to her broadcast roots and take her conservative message to Fox News as a regular commentator, the cable channel announced Monday.

"I am thrilled to be joining the great talent and management team at Fox News," Palin said in a statement posted on the network's Web site. "It's wonderful to be part of a place that so values fair and balanced news."

Fox said that according to the multiyear deal, Palin will offer political commentary and analysis on the cable channel, as well as Fox's Web site, radio network and business cable channel.

She also will host occasional episodes of Fox News' "Real American Stories," a series debuting this year that the network said will feature true inspirational stories about Americans who have overcome adversity.

"Governor Palin has captivated everyone on both sides of the political spectrum and we are excited to add her dynamic voice to the FOX News lineup," Bill Shine, executive vice president of programming, said in a statement.

The network declined to say when Palin will start or how much she is being paid. Also unclear is how the arrangement will work, whether Palin will move to New York or commute from Alaska. Company representatives did not respond to calls seeking comment and Palin's spokeswoman, Meghan Stapleton, did not respond to e-mails seeking comment.

Palin, 45, is hugely popular with conservatives and has more than 1.1 million Facebook followers.

She stepped down as Alaska governor in July, 17 months before the end of her first term in office and less than a year after she vaulted to overnight fame as John McCain's running mate.

The bombshell resignation stunned even supporters and fueled widespread speculation on her next career step — with predictions ranging from seeking the presidency in 2012 to hosting a conservative talk show. She told Barbara Walters in November that a 2012 presidential bid was not on her radar but added she wouldn't rule out playing some kind of role in the next presidential election.

Since resigning, Palin has had colossal success with her best-selling memoir "Going Rogue," released four months after she left office. She finished a nationwide tour in December after hitting some of the political battleground states from the 2008 election and drawing thousands of fans.

If she were to seek the presidency, her new job would provide yet another stage from which to advance her conservative platform. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who sought the presidency in 2008, also hosts a talk show on Fox News and hasn't ruled out another run for president.

Palin majored in journalism with an emphasis on broadcasting at the University of Idaho and worked part-time as a weekend sportscaster in 1988 for KTUU-TV in Anchorage. She wasn't married at the time and used her maiden name Heath. The station's sports director, John Carpenter, said the young broadcaster left after a few months because of the low pay.

Carpenter said he was sorry to see her go. She was a hard worker who enjoyed the entire process, not just being in front of the cameras, he said.

"She knew sports, she could talk sports, she looked OK on TV," Carpenter said. "She had the aptitude, no question."

Palin's upcoming commentary career had her Facebook fans giddy with excitement Monday.

"Tell 'em like it is girl!!!!!!," one person wrote on a post.

"I look forward to seeing you on Fox....but I hope it doesn't prevent you from running in '12!," another wrote.

How many years before tv and politics are indistinguishable?

Let's face it, Obama's a lousy President but would be great as anchor of the evening news...

I can't see a transition from news commentator to presidential candidate. Perhaps she's decided she makes a better messenger.

Yeah, I'd say this knocks her out of the running for 2012. But, I have been wrong before.

This is exactly what JD Hayworth did after losing in '06.

Got on the radio for a couple years, rebuilt a following, and is now running for office.

Sarah's not done yet.  She has plans.

This is not her first anti-career move.

This move might put her in a position to outflank a lot of the media/liberal types who hate her.  I'm sure it pays well also.

Meghan Stapleton is from my hometown, which also happens to be the home of WIlliam Seward (of "Seward's Folly" fame).  Because of these coincidences, our city was able to persuade Palin to come here for an event celebrating the founders of our city.  She gave a speech on the steps of city hall, and thousands of people showed up to listen, including us.

I sent pictures to my aunt and uncle, who are big fans of her.  Later that evening, my uncle, who is a Syracuse police officer, sent me back a picture of him and Palin, arms around each other, mugging for the camera.  Guess who was working security at the airport that night and escorted her onto the plane?  :)

Thank goodness!  Now FOX's babe makers will get a crack at fixing her hairstyle.  I get tired of looking at her eyes through bangs.  I wonder if she will have to go blond as that seems to be a requirement for female talking heads on FOX.

That said, smart move on her part.  IIRC Roger Ailes was the media poobah who morphed Nixon from a sow's ear into a silk purse.  If he can pull that stunt off, imagine what he can do when the raw timber starts off looking like Palin.

That was sorta my first thought.  This is an excellent opportunity for Palin to polish up her media image and practice working in front of the camera.

Palin strikes me as the type who doesn't much care about appearances, only substance.  While this is a good attitude, there is a certain value in satisfying appearances in addition to the substance, particularly in national politics.

Will she get the FOX standard issue knee-high leather boots? If so, I favor this career move.

The Fox Business Network seems to be notably more fond of brunettes than FNC. Agreed on the hair.

Not too long... which is nice. Maybe our polticos will be easier on the eyes in the future. And the media peeps will out themselves and their affiliations more than they now admit.

I'm sure she had some fun.  I'm sure she still cares very much about her looks.

Not that it's a bad thing or something to be frowned upon; everyone wants to look good.

I really like Sarah Palin.  I think she seems like a nice person, and I agree with her on lots of the things she stands for.  But I just don't think she's that intelligent.  I love watching Krauthammer on Special Report.  Now he is really intelligent.  But Palin just doesn't dive in intellectually, and I think that does a disservice to the arguments she tries to make.

Yes, it's better to back an Ivy League politician like Obama, even if you don't agree with him. He's so intelligent the US is either going to be bankrupt or nuked.

She couldn't name a supreme court decision other than Roe v Wade.  She couldn't name a major newspaper she read.  Those aren't "trick questions".  And even if they are, the(potential) most powerful person in the world better have enough verbal agility to get around them without appearing foolish.

If it is that easy for the media to trick me into thinking Palin isn't intelligent why don't they do it with other politicians too?  For some reason they can't trick me into thinking Cheney, Bush, Huckabee, Romney, Paul, or Mccain is slow, but they managed to do it with Palin?

This doesn't mean I have any love for Obama.

The US is going to be bankrupt either way if you believe the economists.

As for nuked... not likely.

You ought to base your opinion of the woman on something other than what the media has presented to you.  The picture they paint of her is false.

She was told the interview would be one thing, and it wasn't. I suspect she was also extremely nervous.

Funny that she hasn't been that stupid since.

Funny, too, that she's been lampooned ever since as being stupid, even during the debates when she accurately described the constitutional role of the VP regarding the Senate, and Biden got it wrong. But it was still Palin who was stupid.
Title: Re: Sarah Palin to be commentator for Fox News
Post by: Headless Thompson Gunner on January 19, 2010, 12:19:26 PM
It's not only that she was misled about the intent of the interview.  That interview lasted many hours over multiple days.  The same questions were asked over and over again, until she got flustered, frustrated, angry, or bored enough to give a bad answer.  Then all of the bad answeres were condensed into the version that was presented to the public.

Anybody can be made to look bad under those circumstances.  Palin, you and me, the bestest flashiest savviest politician out there, it doesn't matter.  Anyone can look like a fool when the media is trying that hard to paint a false picture.

(And the flip side is that anyone can be made to look good, too, if that's the intent.  Every public image is created, either positive or negative, and it's up to us to piece through the image and see the real person.)
