Just a reminder, The Pacific series starts on HBO on the 14th of March.
I love the Band of Brothers series so hopefully the Pacific will be just as good.
-
I've been watching some of the previews and "making of" documentaries on Comcast On Demand. It really looks good.
-
When's it coming out on DVD?

The Pacific: Trailer (HBO) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e99B80crU3E)
I loved BoB, so this will be a must-see series for me.

The sooner, the better. It's going into my library for sure.
I'm hoping that HBO's successful experience with BoB will prompt them to release The Pacific on DVD earlier.

The casualties from some of those battles were horrifying, and worse for them. :O

True story. I don't have TV service at all, so I won't be watching it on HBO.
What I TRULY hope for, is since they have been very successful with BoB, and GenKill, and now will probably hit another home run with The Pacific; I would like to see another mini-series about Iraq or Afghanistan, but following an Army unit instead of Marines. Perhaps about the day to day life on a FOB, going on missions, avoiding IEDs, mortar attacks, interacting with the locals, etc.

Thanks for the update. I was thinking about this yesterday and wondering when it was going to come up. I can't WAIT til this comes out! [popcorn]

I was wondering if Garand sales will pick up in a couple month. :)

I'd bet on it.

As much as I liked, loved, Band of Brothers, I'll probably
skip this Series.
I am 100% sure it will be awesome and as accurate as possible. But I cannot get past the political views of Hanks and Speilberg. Leftist loons. It just goes against the grain. I will not support folks who in my
view are America haters, yet want to make money using the system they hate.

I'm not condoning illegal behavior. But I will mention one word. Torrents.

Pretty sure that's condoning illegal behavior. Just wait till your local library gets it and watch it that way if you don't want to give them your money.

When did Tom Hanks become an "American hater"? I'm pretty sure I've seen him speak in favor of our armed forces and such. His movies about the military have been sympathetic.

He's donated money to Democrats a lot, but on that argument, half the country would be America-haters.
-
I don't hire Hanks and Spielberg for their political opinions. I hire them because they make good movies.
-
Same here.
-
If your like me and have Dish Network but no HBO dish is running a free preview of the first episode on I think channel 101 next week.

Very true.

I hope they do one on the Korean War. WWI would be interesting also.

WWI has been shamefully neglected, film & book-wise.

WWI has been shamefully neglected, film & book-wise.
There are lots of books on WWI. One of my favorites is "All Quiet on the Western Front" There are two movies made in regards to that book.
Lots of movies have WWI components in them, my favorite is "Sergeant York".
I think the lack of movies because WWII had a ton of news and government film rolls taken during the war. Also there were a ton of pro WWII motion pictures made during WWII to boost American Morale and sell war bonds. Plus the times that followed WWII were at least pictured the golden age of the 20th Century for Americans.
But I'd love to see a WWI film or mini series done on the same level as Band of Brothers or Saving Private Ryan.

whlie I would very much disagree with the political views of Hanks and Spielberg as to current events, I cannot fault the efforts they have both gone to in order to memorialize the commitments and sacrifices made by Americans during WWII. Both were very strong supporters of the WWII Memorial (which is a tremendous memorial). And, as was said, I am willling to respect their film work, if not their political views.
As for me, this series will hit a little closer to home than Band of Brothers. My grandfather served as crew on an LST in the Pacific. his craft was hit, and sunk, and he spent two days in the water before he was pulled out and treated for his injuries. His knife holds a place of honor in my gunsafe. But, onthe positive side, the film will inspire in me a desire to get an M1 Carbine and maybe a Victory Model S&W, both of which he carried during his service.

Doesn't that mean you have to just...never watch TV or go to a movie again? I mean, seriously, how would you avoid films that send money towards evil liberals?

I ponied up the $5/month to get HBO for 3 months just for this show.

Just the ones that everytime they open their mouths something political comes out.
And I don't watch much TV. The last time I sat down to watch a series was BSG. And boy was I dissapointed. The first 2 seasons, especially the 1st, was some great scifi. After that, it was a left loonie fest.
"The Boss". Bruce Springsteen was one of my favorite singers. Well, until everytime he gets behind a mic he starts his liberal tirades. With him you paid to go to a concert, to hear him sing.....and campaign for Kerry and then Obama.
Bottom line. I really don't care what ideology you follow, just shut up about it with regards to your product. You don't see a photo of Bush on Haliburton trucks or Obama on Walmart trucks.

I'm still trying to remember something Hanks said. What I do remember is his support for our armed forces.
