Title: Blarrghh.
Post by: Mabs2 on March 31, 2010, 05:59:00 PM
I don't know if I ever mentioned it here, but I have a .22 Llama Especial whose recoil spring plug launched off into my room some time ago.  Today I've been looking for it again.
I really don't think I'm ever going to find it.
I've tried the usual suspects but can't find one any where online.
I'm considering maybe getting one fabricated.
Any ideas?

Magnetic pickup thingy. Go over the floor, push it in behind all the cracks and crevices, furniture, etc.

Yea that's a good idea.  I imagine it's gotten somehow between the carpet and the wall, under the molding.
I do know the general area it flew, and I just scoured it again, moving many things around.  It could be caught up in one of the things I moved, but I don't think so.
It is rather elusive.

You can get the "magnet on a stick" yard-picker-upper thingies at Home Depot pretty cheap.

Home Depot, eh?  Nearest one of those is a few hour drive.  Have to hope Ace has one.

one other place to look is right up next to a desk or other furniture that pushes into carpet, and if you have central heat/air in the vent.

edit: oh and on top of the molding on doors windows and on the window ledges

Sorry, currently sold out, otherwise it would have been a nine dollar part.

What does the plug look like? Use a shell casing from something, in 1911s an expended .45 shell makes a dandy recoil spring plug replacement. Not sure if that was an accident or if John Browning really was a genius.

Blah, sorry, totally missed that you said recoil spring plug. But yeah, that website is good for getting obscure firearm parts.

I've tried Numrich before also, problem is they often don't list condition of their parts. So I found my grip screw only to find that someone had found them well before me with the wrong size screwdriver.

I've tried Numrich, too, but they didn't have one listed at all any of the times.
It's a bit different from a 1911 plug, instead of going around the spring it goes into it slightly.
Side profile would look like this.
         _________
     __|             |__
    |__               __|
        |             |
        |________|  With this lower part going into the spring slightly.
I've considered carving one out of wood or finding something similar, but no such opportunities have presented themselves.

I had a spring from a .22 Colt that sprang off in my living room 15 years ago.  It took me a week to find it, and all I had in my living room was a tv and a recliner.

Turned out it was caught in the drapes somehow, and took a week to drop to the carpet.

Well, the area that it flew to is sort of the corner of the room where I just "put stuff" I want out of the way.  So it's pretty much lost unless the magnet thing finds it.

One long boring weekend mid-watch while standing torpedo room armed guard I launched recoil spring plug from my 1911 into the torpedo room bilge while I was doing field strip drills. Oops.
Lucky for me the oncoming duty Torpedoman was a good friend and also the small arms petty officer so he was able to find me a replacement.

Hopefully you were armed with more than said 1911...

Forgive me if this is so obvious to you all...  It works best on tile, wood, linoleum.  Also works on carpet, not so good on deep shag.

Get a flashlight, or better yet a worklight or lamp, down to floor level.
Lay down with my ear on the floor.  Move around and look from various points.

Everything looks huge, and casts long shadows.

Best of luck.

That's actually the main problem.  It's not exactly shag carpet but it's still very long than most modern carpets.  Plus, being in a corner, it wont have much room to cast shadow anyway. =\

Now I've lost the 25 gram mass for my powder scale.

I have a cat, all it does is poop on everything. :(
And no, it's an old Pact my uncle gave me because he got one of those super new RCBS Chargemasters.
The thing barely works, I have to calibrate it for every charge and I'm still not convinced it's accurate.

If you can afford to, save up for an RCBS RangeMaster 750. 750gr capacity, .1gr resolution, and a really great scale with an AC adapter.

Looks nice.  RCBS seems to make good scales.
I know that the ChargeMaster is pretty amazing.

Sure way not to lose a recoil spring plug. Point it at your face while stripping. Don't worry, you'll be able to find it with your good eye after it bounces off of you.

As nice as that seems, at more than three times the cost of an RM750, it's just too much for me. I load a lot of rounds for accuracy, weighing every load, but... automation isn't worth THAT much to me.

That's the one I have and that PTK there has been looking forward to having access to. It has probably decreased my load times by a factor of 5 at least. Really great for throwing out those 248 grain charges quickly. :)

I probably did have it pointed at my face, then said "That's probably bad!" and when I turned it away is when it slipped.
Stupid me. :(

Yea, I got nothing better to do when reloading, but it would be nice.  I think there's a lot of cool factor...factoring in, too.

I think the reason he got it was for his .50 BMG.  Instead of throwing six loads up powder and then trickling up he just pushes one button.  Takes a while, but eventually, 'beeeep.'

That's one of the cartridges I use it for. When loading pistol cartridges it dispenses fast enough that I can fill a case, set it down and by the time I've grabbed a new case it's got the next measure ready. With the BMG loads though I can take the newly filled case, put it in the press, seat the bullet, put the finished cartridge in a box and fetch the next primed empty casing in the time it takes to finish a single measure. That's actually kinda useful in keeping me from double charging since I'm immediately seating a bullet after dumping in the powder.  =D

Yea, takes a lot of stuff out that you'd normally mess up.
His overcharges by a grain or less sometimes, but very infrequently.  It really is a sweet piece of hardware.
I tried to get him to let me borrow it since mine is out of commission.  No dice.

I lurves me my chargemaster.  It's great for doing rifle ammo on a single stage or for working up loads.  I love the autorun feature.  Loads up the pan. take pan, dump powder into case, replace pan, and it automatically dispenses the next charge.
