Title: Cook books
Post by: bratch on January 23, 2006, 08:56:43 PM
I've decided to try to eat at home instead of out everyday.  I'm now in the need for a good bachelor cook book. Any recommendations.

For pretty good meals that are pretty easy and quick, check out America's Test Kitchen's website, www.americastestkitchen.com.

To get most of the recipes you have to register, but I just use www.bugmenot.com.
And if that doesn't get you in, use a disposable email address from www.spambob.com.

Also, if you have time, watch their show in Public Television.

Look for a copy of "The Best Recipes from the Backs of Bottles, Boxes, Cartons and Cans." Another good one is the older version of the Better homes and Gardens cookbook. It's a three-ring binder with a red-and-white checked cover. It has some recipes that the newer ones don't have.

cosine beat me to ATK. I'm an Alton Brown fan, and for traditional cookbooks covering a lot of ground, I use Southern Living a lot. I would try before you buy--get recipes online, and then buy the cookbook if you like the author's style.

www.foodnetwork.com and www.recipesource.com are excellent online databases.

Here a couple of options for easy.

Campbell's 1-2-3 cookbook
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007917ZQ/qid=1138112781/sr=1-5/ref=sr_1_5/002-8017140-7302466?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=284507

Betty Crocker's Bisquick Cookbook

We baught the Campbell's one for my brother-in-law.  He likes it.  And we have been using the busquick one recently.

Bisquick is absolutely horrific stuff. Do yourself a favor and cut your tongue out before you try eating it.

The Alton Brown cookbooks are very good. I like them a lot.

Try Rachael Ray's 30 minute meals cookbooks, too. Quick and simple for the most part.

Alton Brown is good.

But my fave is Rachel Ray.  I've got two of her cookbooks, and the recipes are geared towards being quick and tasty.
