Title: We have cornage!!
Post by: 280plus on May 28, 2010, 02:39:27 PM
Planted corn on the north forty square feet about two weeks ago and started to figure it wasn't coming up or the crows got it or something but I went out there today, lo and behold corn sprouts all in neat little rows. Heh, never growed corn before. Now I have to worry about deer I suppose.  =|

Worry more about those kids hearing some rumor about the psychedelic effects of smoking the silk tassles.  Why, if they hear about that you may not have to worry about finding the right kind of wasps to pollinate your future crop so it in fact becomes a crop. =D

Seriously, do you have nuisance deer?  Can you get a tag from the appropriate authorities to protect your crop?  I hear venison is a great accompanyment to roasted corn.

stay safe.

Corn don't grow on Rockytop,
Dirt's too rocky, by far.
That why folks on Rockytop
get their corn from a jar.

Just happened to be listening to that this AM

Smallish development so shooting deer probably wouldn't fly. I was wondering about the pee idea myself. The patch is about 10 ft from the wooded edge so I'll pee along the edge and see how it goes.

I know, I'll get me a boom cannon! That'll endear me to the neighbors for sure!  >:D

I just went out today and picked up some more grape tomato plants.

At least I'm in a place where if I catch one in the garden it can quickly be in the freezer. ;)

Hm.  Thanks.  I'll try that next time.

I've been trying quotes around the link and everything.

Say, how'd you get it to show like that without subbing { } for [ ] and having it show a link in the first place?  Is it the missing "]" in the first {url}?

By the way, I guess if the OP can use the term "cornage," can you say "mowing the grassage?"  How about, "I'm going out to the garden to eliminate some weedage?"  Or, "I'm going to stop and get some gassage for my car?"

Or could Jim147 say, "grape tomato plantage?"  Or "grapeage tomatoage plantage?"

'Tis a puzzlementage.  What a funny languageage we have.

Humph,  "Kernel," indeed. (https://armedpolitesociety.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.loesch.org%2F%7Earviel%2Fhysterical.gif&hash=08b0a4a1d7705860d65d63d1f14dbc8dffc47d07)

Mine is up too, and the first round of radishes are ready. Yum! Kiddo has pronounced them "too spicy" though.

We had our first "wilted lettuce" salad tonight.  Been eating asparagus for several weeks, but it's just about done for the year.

On the corn:  Start making it work for its water.  Water it deep and infrequent to make the roots reach out.  If you water it too often at this stage, you will stunt it.

One of my inconsiderate neighbors* started growing stuff in the 6-foot no-man's land between our apartment building and the chain link fence.

Didn't ask anyone, let alone the managers.

Between this and that disturbance (listening to Rockies games, pounding in stakes, digging little irrigation canals, and what not,) he used a substance called, no kiddin', "Fox Piss" to ward off the little herb predators.  Like wabbits.

It stunk to high heaven but it's apparently a real commercial product.

The high point for me, and the low point for him, was when all his watering made the retaining wall collapse --rumble-sploosh.

He got asked to leave.  The unauthorized garden was only one of his many inconsiderate actions.  He just had a tendency to go do what he wanted whenever he wanted.

However, it might work for you if you can find this stuff and your cornage is far enough away from your dwellingage.

EDITED TO ADD:  Found it:

I guess they changed the name.

* Senior citizen's apartment.  Most of us have learned to be pretty considerate of others, because we were allowed by the Universal Spirits to graduate to "senior citizen" status. See, learning consideration for others is how come we survived that pre-senior citizenship training course. A lot of people don't make it through that classage.

My corn is just over knee hig on me now.
I've got tomatoes about the size of billard balls starting to take on some color. Green onions out the wazoo. My green beans are making beans, the pods on my peas are swelling nicely, I'll have fresh peas this week. The fresh peas will go very well with my new potatoes that I've been getting for a couple of weeks now. My jalepenos have peppers on them about the size of my thumb.
Okra is up nicely Squash is coming on.

I use a hot wire fence to keep the varmints out, works pretty good though it can be a bit harsh on some of the smaller birds, they land on a wire next to one of the T-posts and if they get to close to the post -  poof- bird hanging upside down on the wire, got 8-9 last year and 2 small rabbits mamaged to find the bottom wire and complete the circuit.

Speaking of corn...I just learned a fun fact that will definitely reassure your faith in humanity.

Corn smut. Did you know it's actually considered a delicacy?

Say, how'd you get it to show like that without subbing { } for [ ] and having it show a link in the first place?  Is it the missing "]" in the first {url}?

In order to do that, you need to break up the [url] tag so that the page parser doesn't recognize it.  I do that by putting a [i][/i] pair right after the first [ in the tag, so that (in my raw post) it appears like this:
[[i][/i]url=http://www.foo.bar.com]link text[/url].

Since the empty italic tag pair renders as null space on the page, you don't see a space after the bracket, but since it's there, it disrupts the url tag from being parsed as such.

(And in this post, I had to double-layer this, adding [i][/i] tags inside the first [i] inside the [url] tag.)
