This axe head as been at the family cabin for at least 80 years. I brought it home thinking to put a new handle on it. Once I got it under a light I realized it is hand made and would rather find out if it is worth something before I stick a handle in it and let folks abuse it. It also has an issue you can see in the 3rd pic.
Any ideas?

Looks like one of the axes specifically made for making flat spots on logs or planking. I think it's called a hewing axe. The offset lets you get the axe head right down on the wood so you can get the surface nice and smooth.

Ah.. that totally makes sense and when I google that it basically shows a picture of that axe. This must be what my great grandparents used to do the ends of the logs for the building. Definitely not letting somebody take it out to try to split wood with!
Thanks!

Ditto- it's not a general purpose axe.
I'd still put a nice handle on it, rub a nice oil finish on the handle, and make it a nice wall hanger...

it's a keeper and should work to split kindling off of well dried firewood
but a 20 dollar hatchet will do that too...
axes are cool and under valued on ebay

And I thought someone was asking for advice in dealing with his mother-in-law.

Is that one of the Axes of Evil ???

Got one of those, too.

sweet! I was looking into a hobby business of hand hewing logs/timber until the housing market crashed. Granfors still makes hewing axes.

Hewing axe.
The Foxfire series of books has a section on how they are used.

I have a scar on my left hand as a reminder how not to use one.
