I know some of you probably think we're a little nutz...

I'd say that pretty much seals it. Here's the thing: most of us love this site. Its mostly like the campfire at a fishing camp, minus the vulgar language. Politics and religion usually without anyone getting punched in the nose. Current events, entertainment, news perspective and commentary. General BSing. Its a great way to spend an hour in the morning with my coffee just reading whats going on.
Most of us also respect Oleg for his work in the RKBA world. The private ownership of this site leaves it open to things that a corporate site wouldn't be open to. But, we also have to recognize when something is a real threat not only to shutting down the site, but to the generosity of the site ownership.
Anyways, I just thought I'd share with you all some of the thought process in the instituting of this decision.

No complaints here, Jamis. Have to CYA these days in the litigious society we live in.
Might it be worthwhile to sweep through old posts and delete copied & pasted content? It seems like a lot of work, but maybe each of us can police our own?

Filler material. Huh. You'd raise the ocean level to the point where salt water would be lapping at my doorstep up here in Golden, Colorado, 6000-ish feet. Beach front property, anyone? Anyone know offhand how big a "cubit" is?
Do I foresee, in my handy-dandy 80mm crystal ball (which is my most accurate one) a series of pre-emptive unrecoverable server crashes, where the sites have to start up from scratch from Thread 1 Post 1?

I'm thinking there are probably wwwwaaayyyy too many to do a full sweep, but active posts will likely be edited, even if they originiated before the new policy.

Yeah, I am. It just never occurred to me that anyone here, in the midst of a serious discussion, would post a phony link purporting to be for a legal source on the topic of discussion while actually leading to ... whatever THAT was.

funny thing, today the only source for many of those olde materials is TFL

BridgeWalker would probably call them job openings. :)
I understand why the new policy is in place entirely. But, keep in mind it's a very limited number of websites owned by a single parent company that is taking this "sue first" track. The RIAA (music industry) tried it in recent years and they got something like a 2% return on their "investment" in it. Although in that case I think they're really just trying to put the fear into people illegally copying music.
This, though, is just fishing for money. That's all there is to it and I don't believe it'll pan out for them. They're just going to get blacklisted by blogs and news aggregators.

Don't you have to submit paperwork and whatnot in order to copyright something? What is the difference to reading it on there site and reading the copied text here? If the text is copyrighted then how can we even post links to the site, shouldn't the website link also be copyrighted? And finally, how are we supposed to talk about specific parts if we are not allowed to post it?

Simple....we don't refer to the articles....we just make it up....that's what the news folks do....

Actually no, you don't. Copywrite registration is voluntary and just gives you more concrete legal standing with you work.
