Title: For giggles... current daily carry?
Post by: PTK on August 24, 2010, 12:06:51 PM
Just for S&G, I'm curious what out-there things anyone else may carry now and then, or daily, as a CCW. Here's my entry:

I knew some folks who carried black powder while in college.

Alas, I never carry anything unusual.

I'm just cheering myself up by starting a fun discussion, I miss all the guns I've recently sold, and yet more are slated to go out the door, so... :)

Taurus Total Titanium 651 .357mag
Pocket, Boot, Fag Bag, Ankle
Pretty much the least I'll walk out the door with, these days.

SW1911 .45ACP
IWB, OWB, Shoulder
In addition to the revolver above.  Both are pretty much required carry if I'm with my family, as I tend to gear up when with them out & about.

SW629 4" .44mag
Shoulder, OWB forthcoming
I bought a shoulder holster for it and carry it every once in a while in addition to the revo on top.

Springfield XD9.

It has sat abandoned in the back of my safe, passed over in deference to 1911's and CZ's over the last couple years.  Despite its light weight, there was something intangibly "wrong" with the grip and contours as I carried it, and I didn't like the trigger and feel as much as the metal framed guns.  Then there was the striker, too.  I find hammer-driven guns conceal better.

Anyways, it's back out of the safe.  I've learned from all my experimenting at shooting steel matches, that as a southpaw if I want to change magazines as rapidly as possible, I need to use my thumb to do that.  Less shifting of the grip.  Eventually, I'll invest in a ambi mag release for the 1911 platform and go back there, or maybe look at the FNX-9 series of handguns, or maybe someone will have an ambi/reversible mag release for the CZ platform by then.

But, I have noticed an increase in speed of reloads now that I use the XD, over the CZ.

I've also found some MecGar 18rd magazines that fit (mostly) flush like the factory mags.  About a 0.1" difference, so no big deal.  For 2 more rounds, I'm trying them out until they prove themselves trustworthy, then they'll make it into my carry rotation.

S&W M37 38special.  I load it with Speer's 135gr "Short Barrel" load.

My current holster is different and the grips have been changed to Hogues, but that has been my CCW for the past 5 years.  I also pocket-carry from time to time as the situation dictates.

CZ75 Stainless or CZ85

CZ75 Stainless or CZ85

(https://armedpolitesociety.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi124.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp17%2Fazredhawk44%2F100_0499.jpg&hash=9832cf5b3374f98240ca6ae032b8b025b16ee04c)

Is this "stainless?"  My recollection is that it is a satin nickle finish.

Can I get an 85 mag release and install it in this pistol?

Wait a second... can I invert the existing part and make it a southpaw installation?  Czcustom.com shows this part as potentially reversible.

As a 1911 is next on my list of guns to acquire (yes, I know, heresy and all that), how are you liking the Smith 1911?

I'll add a pic of my carry gun tonight.

Edit: And here it is:

I have my Makarov when I need a lighter piece, but I prefer the .40 if I can carry it.

No pic handy, but a S&W 438 pocket carried.

I've been debating a LCP or something similar to replace it when I wear tighter pants.

My SW1911 > Sliced Bread

I think it is about the best outta the box 1911 you can find under $1000.  The STI 1911 carry guns are good, too, for a little more $$$.

It is my preferred carry weapon and the weapon that goes in the quick-access safe next to the bed every night.  Reliable, more accurate than I.  Makes me look like I know how to shoot well.  What's not to like?

I did not know how accurate it was until a local bull's eye shooter asked to try it.  He took his one-hand stand, let fly with a magazine and we brought the target back.  Kinda humbling when some dude shoots your own gun better than you do, making groups half the size you do at 25 yards. With one hand.

Maybe if I was in a war zone, I'd prefer an internal extractor, but the S&W external beast is just that: a beast.  It works with no fiddling.

The fit & finish s good and the controls very positive.

It loves its Wilson 47D and the 10-round equivalents.  The Wilson 47D mags came with it from the factory and they worked great.  No need to experiment on another 7 or 8 round mag.  I own 6 or 7 47Ds and one 10-rounder.  Need to get more 10-rounders.

I also loves Remington 230gr Golden Sabers and feeds them like hardball.  Real slick, no hesitation.  Only HP it had troubles with was the Speer Gold Dot, a common problem load for 1911s.

Anyways, I have only done light mods to it:
1. Now has grip tape on front strap.  The vertical cuts were OK, but the grip tape rawks.  Grip tape also behind the rear slide serrations to maximize the area that is grippy when I manipulate the slide.
2. Trijicon tritium night sights
3. Slimmer Chip McCormick cocobolo grip panels.  My wife shoots it better with these and I shot these or the stock panels equally well.

Get a good-quality carry holster of the Milt Sparks VM2 type (real deal or clone), a good belt & mag holster and you'll be good for carry.

My next carry gun will be a SW1911PD, the Commander-length scandium-alloy frame deal.

S&W 042, the predecessor to the 442.  So far, the anodizing is rubbing off from constant pocket carry, but it's surprisingly rust-free.  Hell, I even got a 940 to rust, one memorable summer...

Occasionally, a P3AT.

Even more occasionally, a Sig P239.

Gerber Powerframe folder. Surprisingly sharp, an inexpensive enough that I won't mind to lose it permanently if required...also more comfortable for me to carry than my other folders (also Gerber made).
Also, a Maglite, either 3 or 4 C-cells (can't be bothered to grab it an open it up to have a look).

Yes and no. The law states that "normal use of a pocket knife or multitool" should not count as a violation of the law (unless it's a balisong or switchblade). As for fixed blades, if they are necessary for you occupation or other legal doings you can carry them, as an example, been out fishing and stopping by to get some beer before you get home? Probably ok. Carpenters or other craftsmen will probably not be bothered much either if they have a Mora on their belt while on lunch or while running a personal errand. Cops have quite a lot of power to decide whether to take it from you. I got away with carrying a huge Maglite in my backpack, when reason states that I should've been hauled in for questioning and probably be charged with carrying a weapon (since the law is a "rubber band law" that can be stretched to classify pretty much anything as a weapon if you are unlucky).  Fortunatly for me, they were apparently more interested in chasing after the persons who had done graffiti near where I was at at the time =).

If you can motivate a need, you will probably get away. You are quite unlikely to get away if caught carrying one while trying to get into a pub and similar. Also, some groups are always considered to have a need, including military in uniform while on duty, and also Scouts in uniform. The cops won't try to take knives from army guys, because they don't want to be asked if they want to search for assault rifles in the trunk either. Also, no cop would try to take a knife from a Scout, because they don't want their boss to have a Word with him/her about publoc relations =D.

Ayup. I do have a bunch of Moras around my apartment though, including one under my pillow and one in the closet closest to the door =). Also a claw hammer, and a pair of cheap brassknuckles hanging from a hook .
I did IWB carry a Mora in a 6 o' clock position several years ago in a bout of fear and extreme paranoia after having been assaulted twice in the same fall.
I do agree, Mora knives are great. Cut my teeth fingers on a Mora Scout knife when I was 6 or so =). Learned to be more careful after that =).

Edit: did some quick research. It's a bitch to try to translate the court's decision, but it seems to be favorable in regard to "small sheath knives" as well as folding & pocket knives. Just don't be an ahole while carrying.

CRKT makes a good knife for the money.  You could spend more and get a better knife, but I doubt you could spend the same amount and get a better knife.  You could certainly spend the same amount and get an inferior knife.

+1!  I love me some C-cell Maglites.

I keep one 4-cell C in a maglite bracket attached to headboard of the bed, and a 2-cell in a bracket on the wall by the gun safes.  Actually, from the bed I can reach 5 good flashlights without standing.  There are several more within a step or two.

Okay, back to the thread...

My usual EDC is a Glock 26, IWB with either a CRKT or a Ka-Bar.  If conditions warrant, I'll also carry a Taurus 85 in an ankle holster.

Can't carry much d/t my job (working w/ mentally ill & MR offenders in our school district); but, off duty, I have at least a Kershaw Leek and Leatherman Squirt on my person and an XD sub-compact 9mm in my vehicle. When I get my CHL, I'm thinking of getting either a .32ACP NAA or a Bond Arms .410 for pocket carry (don't want a .380....make sorting 9mm brass more difficult...)

I am banned from carrying at my job so I would never carry my daily carry there, a S&W M&P 9mm:

When I'm driving my tactical golf cart to the mailbox, I have at least my 45 colt. In the spring I keep a Marlin model 60 in a scabbard for the cottonmouth that like to sun across the dog paths.  I carry a shotgun or .222 in the fall. In the hot humid summer I have whatever I throw under the dash.

Now I just need to mount some pods to the hard points of the golf cart. I'm thinking twenty rockets would do. A minigun would always be nice. >:D Maybe with a katana sticking out the front.

Did I just reply to three threads at once?  [popcorn]

I can't believe I'm the first to provide this answer: a S&W 642...in a Kramer pocket holster.

S&W M&P 9 when I'm not at work. C5 Leather holster.

I don't think I'd get in trouble at work (I work with a bunch of rednecks who also shoot/hunt), but it is technically against the law

I will have a Kershaw Blur soon to replace my MIA Kershaw Storm II. In the meantime, I'm carrying my Gerber Gator II. I also carry a Gerber Profile fixed blade at work.

Just go get a Mora #1. FAR better, quicker to deploy. Is it legal to carry there? :)

Got a Frost's sport knife (think rubber-gripped stainless Mora for wet environments) in the Blazer and a #1 in the nightstand next to my .45.  There's also a CRKT running around somewhere, but my Benchmade Griptilian is pretty near indestructible.

I have a few $1.50 folders in various places for stuff that would tear up any knife; they're pretty sharp for the first half-dozen uses, but getting the edge back is nearly impossible.

My normal daily carry is this Delta Elite that has had the full treatment from Ted Yost. About 95% of my carry is open carry so I use a blackhawk serpa holster for it.

(https://armedpolitesociety.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2F0603%2FBob8251%2FGuns%2520and%2520Stuff%2F100_1870.jpg&hash=2be45e88131c537e6ebcaaeb30a17ea12b648b60)

On days I don't feel like carrying the Delta, perhaps going to a meeting or a picnic I will carry this 610-2 that has had a little work done to it also.

(https://armedpolitesociety.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2F0603%2FBob8251%2FGuns%2520and%2520Stuff%2F610sm.jpg&hash=cec73d56eed34f246ccdbdc1ed3b0541296ced46)

Because I do a lot of OC I tend to carry more full size guns than not. Often when going for our evening walk I will have a S&W 25-5 (45 Colt) with a 6" barrel in a cross draw holster.

I will always have a knife with me, usually a CRKT M16 or a SOG Trident.

My "always" gun is an S&W 340Sc with Crimson Trace lasergrips in an Uncle Mike's pocket holster. I load it with Winchester 145 gr Silvertip Hollowpoint .357s.

(By "always" I mean that if I'm outside the house and not going anywhere that's off limits for concealed carry, it's in my pocket.)

Either a S&W 649-0 or, more likely for the past few months, it's a a Colt Detective Special.  Carried OWB as long as I am awake.  Two speed strips in the pocket.

When I go out & about for an extended day I usually add the Rorbaugh 9 in the back pocket along with an extra magazine.

And let's not forget the WSP Downsizer in .45acp - always on my belt.

Seeker_two -- Take it from one who has tried it.  Forget about the Bond Arms derringer as an EDC.  The sucker is heavy, clunky, and unless you are specifically hoping to kill snakes.  It, like the downsizer, is good only as a belly gun - jammed right into someone's belly.  Look for Shadan7's post here about the Bond derringer: http://www.thehighroad.org/archive/index.php/t-33310.html .  There seems to be something telling about not having tested the .410 000 round, in spite of his comment about home defense use.

stay safe.

I've seen two of you with CRKT knives. How do you like them? Considering buying one when I have some money to spare.

Mine's "OK, I guess".  $19 at Le Mart de Wal, 4 or 5 years ago.  The handle is too narrow for me to grasp very well.  I trust lock backs more than liner locks, even with extra gimmecky lock things.  For the price, though, it'll definately do.  I've seen way more expensive knives I liked less.

I would normally be carrying a Buck Juno (another farm store or stuff-mart bargain, ergonomic handle, a lock back, and a quite stout half serrated blade), but I accidentally left mine in my daughter's college dorm room last week, moving her in.

Knives are something that I loose every once in a while, so I'd rather not spend a lot of money on one.  I do like 1)lock backs, 2) pocket clips (keep the knife visible, to push back at the hoplophobes), 3) practical but neither ostentatious or tactikool.

Actually, snakes are the main reason I'd get a BA derringer. I'd like to have something in my pocket when I do yard work for snakes & other pests...something with more "OOMPH" than the typical .38SPL shotshell. That, and I live in a pretty low-threat area (small-town, low crime, etc.), and I have other pistols that can take the primary role if needed.  Plus, THR has a pretty compelling account about the effectiveness of the .410 buckshot load in a SD situation...
http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=237382 (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=237382)

The BA isn't ideal....but no one is lining up to take the first shot, either....

I've fired the 357mag BA Derringer.  It's nice enough, but way heavy for its size.  I've also shot a large snake with 38sp shotshells.  One from 4' away was enough to destroy the head of a 4' rattlesnake.  IMO, an alloy j-frame with the first two chambers filled with shotshells makes a more versatile "yardwork" weapon.

I thought the WSP was cool until the P3AT came along. I did forget I was carrying it several times, ended up far, far into places Where I wasn't supposed to have guns.  :O

I need to take pics of my 3 usual carry pieces to counterbalance all these Ichiro Nagata purty gun pics.

Jamis,

It's yours for $5K.  Guy that made them ended up in Club Fed for mail fraud - took money from customers & claimed he needed the $ to manufacture more, but somehow never got around to building them after about the second batch.  If you find one for less, jump on it.

If the bullet does not kill you, the muzzle blast will.  It lights up a darkened range like a strobe light.

And it can make money for you.  I show folks how to manipulate the controls, load, unload, etc.  I do two shots in under 30 seconds.  You do the same in under 60 seconds and I give you $10.  Fail and you give me $5.  I can remember paying out only twice, while I have gotten back at least 5 times what I paid for it.

stay safe.

I love my CRKT knives.  I'm on my second one.  I don't have a picture, but it appears identical to the one Fly320s posted.

I carry the Glock(19C) with pictured ammo(9mm 124grn +P Golden Saber) concealed.
I'd carry a lot more often if I had a reasonable holster for the P-64.

I pick between a Glock 23C, S&W 1911 (Commander sized, scandium frame, stainless slide), and S&W 442 for my carry needs.  Usually.  I did grab the P3AT the other weekend for a long bike trip.

On the topics of knives, my long-term EDC knife has been a Chris Reeve Small Sebenza.  I've carried it for 5 years and it's still going strong.  It wasn't cheap, but it has outlasted many other knives.
