Title: Does your name influence your life?
Post by: vaskidmark on August 26, 2010, 01:28:11 PM
Mostly Cajun http://mostlycajun.com/wordpress/ has a weekly post of the names of the new babies birthed at the Big Walk-in Hospital across the River from his home on the bayou.

I asked him to consider a retroactive mention for this individual:

Quote
http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20100825/NEWS010701/8260303/Police-Driver-distracted-by-sex-toy

I've often wondered what the children you mention in your Name Game posts will grow up to be like.

Now I know.

Is there any other explanation that would suffice to deal with this situation?  And if there is, do I want to know what it would be?

Anybody want to take a whack at guessing what, besides her name, might have influenced her behavior?

stay safe.

Mrs. Dual went to College with this woman and was in her dorm at UW-Whitewater.

http://www.jsonline.com/news/milwaukee/40874017.html

Although the more-affirming explanation of, "If you can deal with this name, you can do ANYTHING.. blah blah.. take these wings and FLY!" etc. for her name is somewhat B.S.

Mrs. Dual heard it first-hand from Pepsi that her mother was hard-pressed to come up with a name in the hospital, and a nurse suggested "thinking of some of her favorite things".

Glad her life turned out okay, but considering that the first I knew of her she was already a college student, it seemed she was already doing well.

My maiden name was Rabinowitz.  I think it is fair to say that it was not a substantial influence on my significant life choices.

I do suspect, however, that my tendency towards curmudgeonliness derives in no small part from attempting to explain to people that I really, really, really don't care if they spell Sara/h with or without the H.

There was a guy at my old gun club whose name was John Rambo. Didn't look the part.

Bridgewalker, my wife's maiden name (I won't post it publicly) was a 12-letter Polish name that almost nobody could pronounce. She shaved 7 letters off her name by marrying me which, in hindsight, may have been the only good reason for her to do so.

I served with a guy on my last boat that had the bad luck to come from a family with very strict traditions for names. 1st name came from fathers side someting or other, middle name came from mothers side something or other.
He ended up with the 1st name of George and the middle name of George.
Knew a guy from texas that had the actual given name of Bubba Buddy S----
We called him Tim.

There was a lot of name-changing at Ellis Island.  I knew a guy whose grandfather's native name had three "Ks" in it (not one right after the other) and was virtually unpronouncable to Americans.

According to the story, the immigration  officer just said, "Okay, your name will be Kayes."

Worked just fine.

(Incidentally, he was a veteran of Anzio Beach during WWII and still had his old uniform hanging in the closet.  I saw it once when I was hanging up my coat, and I had to pry out of him what it was all about.  But that's all he would say about it except that he was in the infantry.)

We know a fellow whose ancestor(s) came from France.

When asked for a name, the immigrant said something like "my name is ..."

So the official wrote down "Appel" - which I'm told means "name" in French  ;/

I share my last name with a very popular cartoon character.  Wouldn't say it's influenced me very much, aside from never having a nickname.  It's distinctive.  People still manage to misspell it, but they always tend to pronounce it properly.

Colondra.

I sometimes think these names are generated like they make up car names.

Random pattern of vowels, consonants, and dipthongs up to about ten letters, then read them aloud to asess how they sound.  I'm still wondering what "Alantra" means.

Did they hang out with tall black dudes called Chocolate Mousse (http://"http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088286/"), who drink gasoline?

Generally speaking, I have a deep antipathy toward people who have the arrogance/narcissism to give their kids awful names - like Marijuana.  Something like Apple is stupid, but not offensive.  Naming your child Marijuana pretty much tells me that you hate yourself, and resent the child you created.

Somewhere on my Mom's side of the family, there's an adopted daughter named Apple.  I haven't seen her since I was a kid, and I never thought much of it then.  Or maybe, since she was the only Hawaiian I'd ever met, I just thought it was normal for a Hawaiian.

But I guess they DO have weird names in Hawaiia, like Barack Hussein Obama.

I've personally known a Robin Robertson, a Robert Robertson, and a Bob (not short for anything) Robertson. And a Richard Head.

Not sure if it's true, but I'm told a Korean couple with no English named their daughter the most beautiful-sounding word they'd heard in English:

Diarrhea.

I used to work with a girl named Tree. Her parents were Deadheads.

The worst, though, was an article I read that had a list of names matching brand names. There are kids named Lexus, Timberland and Skyy out there. That last one really gets me - naming your kid after a vodka should have some consequences. Mandatory alcohol abuse counseling, or something.

He didn't emigrate, his grandfather did.  I honestly don't remember from where for sure, this was back in 1988 or so, but it was Eastern Europe, Czechoslovakia, perhaps, or maybe Eastern Germany.   I don't remember his grandfather's former name with the three Ks in it... and you can't blame me for that, he only said it once.

Grace Slick of "Jefferson Airplane" (then "Jefferson Starship"  [barf]) had a girl whose name changed to whatever the girl wanted. She named herself Tree for a bit, then went on to other things. Last I read she was named "America."

Frank Zappa has to be the king of this kind of cruel self-indulgence, naming his kids Moon Unit, Dweezil, Ahmet Rodan, and Diva.

George Forman named all of his sons after him (George Jr., George III, George IV, George V and George VI), but at least those are normal names.

See the chart at the bottom of the page. It looks like Hillary dropped off sharply in popularity after 1992.

And who could forget Hilaire Belloc (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hilaire_Belloc)?

Quote
He was powerfully built, with great stamina, and walked extensively in Britain and Europe. While courting his future wife Elodie, whom he first met in 1890, the impecunious Belloc walked a good part of the way from the midwest of the United States to her home in northern California, paying for lodging at remote farm houses and ranches by sketching the owners and reciting poetry.

His best travel writing has secured a permanent following. The Path to Rome  (1902), an account of a walking pilgrimage he made from central France across the Alps and down to Rome, has remained continuously in print.
