Title: Those of you who remember Labgrade and his son Shane
Post by: Larry Ashcraft on March 03, 2006, 06:54:39 AM
I got this email from Crystal this morning:

Shane was admitted to University Hospital ICU yesterday and initial tests last
night indicate vascular rejection which would be worse possible case.  We are
praying that further tests today show something less severe.  We will not know
anything until much later today.

Shane had been doing much better and in fact joined THR a little while back.  Sad news indeed.  I will keep everyone updated if I get any more information.

Sad news. It seems like tough times are hanging over that family like a black cloud.

Prayers sent for better news.

Haven't these people been through enough already? I'm not much of the praying type these days, but they're certainly in my thoughts.

Crap.

I came in just at the end of the Labgrade era, but he struck me as every bit of a stand-up guy. What's the story with his boy?

Shane had a heart transplant and has had trouble with rejection.  It looked like he had it whipped for the last year or so.   He had been battling anemia also, which was brought on by the anti-rejection drugs.  Search THR for threads started by Labgrade, there's a huge one in there somewhere.  Shane and his wife live near Crystal and have two kids, the oldest of which is sixteen and a member of THR also.  His handle is "sixstring"

Grampster, mom's spirits are good, which is what the doctor said was important.  He wants her start getting around on her own and the sooner she does that, the better her chances for a successful surgery in eight weeks.  We'll go visit her tomorrow.  We have found a couple of therapy centers locally, so she won't have to go to a nursing home until she can take care of herself.  She will have to leave the hospital soon because the insurance won't pay for it much longer.

Do you know whether the meds for heart transplant are the same as for kidney? My sister got a new kidney in November and was saying something about being a part of a new medication study; I'll see if can get the info from her if it'll help. Let me know.

UPDATE:

"Shane is stabilized and feeling a little better.  He is being weaned slowly from some of the medications to be sure there is no adverse reaction.  His doctors are not sure what triggered this but it could have been as simple as a cold or other virus.  They let him get up a bit yesterday and stretch his legs which he really appreciated.  He is in ICU so cannot have visitors beyond family but this is not out of the ordinary.  Transplant patients are not normally assigned regular rooms.

Anyway, if Shane stays stable, he may get to come home soon. We are not yet sure when that will be.  (Not soon enough for him, of course.)

Michelle, the grandchildren and I are doing alright even if a little tired.

Thank you for your prayers and praise God for Shanes recovery.

Be blessed."
