Title: Who here is an exterior illumination technician?
Post by: never_retreat on November 27, 2010, 06:13:15 PM
Not a bit of a start, 3800 up with a few more to go.
Here is a crappy cell phone pic, once I'm done I'll drag out the Nikon and tripod.

Oh. You mean decoration, not illumination.

60 watt CFLs will put out more light. maybe as a reinforcement (http://www.1000bulbs.com/product/54680/FC60-11270.html?utm_source=SmartFeedGoogleBase&utm_medium=Shopping&utm_term=277Volt60Watt5UCFL300WEqual5000KFullSpectrumMinStartTemp0DegF84CRI70LumensperWatt12MonthWarrantyMaxLite11270&utm_content=277Volt60Watt5UCFL300WEqual5000KFullSpectrumMinStartTemp0DegF84CRI70LumensperWatt12MonthWarrantyMaxLite11270&utm_campaign=SmartFeedGoogleBase&thissku=FC60777dash77711270&site=google_base)?

That  was a winner?

There were others that were much better.

BY the way, the price of the Tacky Christmas Tour has gone up 20% here in Richmond over last year.  Either the limo/van drivers are desparate or they think the economy will miraculously climb out of the tank in the next 4 weeks.

stay safe.

Your dog wouldn't be named "Snots" would it?

Why Yes I do.

Here is a good photo of the 2011-12 season. Topped out at 7000 this year.

That's a lot of work. I'm tired looking at it.

If I may offer a suggestion for your photography: wait until dusk, and then start shooting and continue shooting as the light gets dimmer. Keep the exposure for the lights, but shoot with varying amounts of the fading daylight. One of your shots will have some detail in the shadows so it doesn't look as though your lights are floating in the air.

Just a suggestion. Feel free to suggest to me how to put lights on my house. ;)

Purty, and surprisingly tasteful considering the bulb count.  =D

We always did the corners, roofline, and gutters when my brother and I were kids.  Looked AWESOME.  Topped out at 5200 bulbs.

Guess I've never really counted my lights - probably lots of bulbs in one of those icicle-light strings, and we've got 3 of them to cover the length of the front of the house.  Nothing on the windows as yet (two stories, so I'll have to think long and hard about whether I want to get up on the roof to string lights on those).  5 columns with a 100-bulb string (reds, greens, and whites), plus another string of them along the carport railing, a 400-ct multicolor string on the ~10' evergreen, 200 on the bushes next to it, and 100 whites on the bush on the other side of the driveway. So, 1300 in LEDs, plus the 3 strings of icicles (I think they're supposed to be 300-ct each?) which are mini tungsten lights - looking to replace those with LEDs for next year, I think. Total of 2200 or so, outside.  Wouldn't mind doubling that, I suppose, but can't imagine tripling it or more.

When I was a kid, living in Round Rock (TX), the house was kind of U-shaped around a sidewalk leading to our front door, with a steel-bar fence and gate. We strung the fence, gate, and bushes on both sides (inside and outside the gate) with white minilights, along with the front door.  Looked VERY nice.

All city houses should be built that way.  ;)

With a trap door in the sidewalk leading to a pit  >:D

Actually I did it saturday and Sunday afternoon. Only took about 6 hours. Nothing required more that a 4' step ladder.
I have another picture I will add.

I usually do the gutters but we had lingering ice on the roof that would not go away. Roof + Ice= not for me.

I will not do tacky.
Next year I thing I'm going to do some animation though.
The big tree on the left is 2400 clear lights. I think I'm going to add another 1200 each of green and red and animate that.

Don't get me wrong, I get a kick out of pics of (or visits to) those places which plastic Santas, inflatable snowmen, and lights blanketing the yard so that it can be seen from orbit.  I just won't do it in MY yard.

And like I said, I'd just never really counted my own bulbs, and surprised myself by determining that I want about a 5000+ light-count display.  But yeah, I won't do tacky.

That's much nicer. That's also a lot of lights. I count at least 132.

I'm pretty sure a Festivus pole is not supposed to have lights on it.
