Title: Britain's lib-dems seem to have the right idea on at least one topic

About reforming their libel laws.

From what I can tell the Liberal - Democrats are somewhat to the left of the American Green party, which makes this interesting for me.

Just the idea that the defendant has to prove anything just seems bad to me.

Parts of the U.S. have similar laws in one area - food libel laws (http://www.google.com/search?q=food+libel+laws).

Their theoretical basis is to prevent unfounded rumors about foods from screwing up the supply/demand for certain foods, putting farmers and ranchers out of business and potentially leading to food shortages.  The actual reason for the laws is lobbying by large food suppliers which depend heavily on sales of meat and dairy products, since most negative press and claims about foods center on meat and dairy products.
