This afternoon, I saw an XKE ragtop rolling down the street. I'm not hip enough on Jags to know the exact year. It was properly British Racing Green & was a 12 cylinder. Ages ago, Road & Track called it the greatest crumper collector known to man. I submit that it is the most beautiful thing to ever roll on wheels.
What do you say?
-
I had an XKE years ago. It was a truly beautiful piece of scrap iron. Ever since then, I buy British only if there's nothing else available.
-
I submit that it is the most beautiful thing to ever roll on wheels.
What do you say?
Nope. This is.
-
if you are gonna include italian cars, then i would submitt that the lambo muira is more beautiful than the daytona.
the XKE is certainly the greatest crumpet collector...especially the early ones with the lights under plexiglass
-
Nah, the 1971 Pantera is... Ford V8, Italian DeTomaso styling. You can buy parts at O'Reilley.
Lots fewer electrical problems than Brit S**t.
There was a guy at college years ago who owned a beautiful Lotus Elan which sat in the parking lot. Pristine condition - because it never ran. They repaved the parking lot around it.
Of course, I could cut and paste all my Lucas Electrics jokes here, but I deign not.
Regards,
Rabbit.
-
I've always been partial to Mustangs of the 67 variety.
-
[bad joke]I would imagine that the "coolest car on the planet" resides somewhere close to the north pole or where ever the coldest region is currently[/bad joke]
I have always like 442s ..... well some of them.
-
9mm, you got it right. The Muira is one of the most beautiful cars ever made. I also like the 575 Maranello.
-
I've always favored 1967 Corvette Stingry 427 Tripowers.
As far as current exotics, the Ferrari 360 Spyder.
Going back a bit, for some reason I've always liked the 930 Turbo. Sort of a rocket-powered bulldog car or something.
-
There is something very wrong with "Antique Tags" on a '66 "Stingray" Vette, and a '68 Mustang as driven by McQueen in "Bullit". [ Think I have years right]
Somebody locally has a Rolls Silver Shadow , and a Bentley. These are pretty cool. Reminds me of James Bond.
-
What, no Pagini Zonda?
Love, James
-
A friend of mine had a XKE, I think it was in the mid 60's. I forget whether it was new or a late model. We had a road track south of town and he let me put it through the paces one Saturday. It was fun to drive. It had an in line engine of some type I think. Was a long time ago, fuzzy memory.
-
The coolest car in the world?
1993 Plymouth Acclaim
The thing gets me to work every day. Takes me to the range and back. Gets me around town and completes every task I ask of it. All this and it cost $0. That's why it's the coolest car in the world.
But these are nice too
-
As long as it's a rag top, it's cool in my world! Love the 'Vertibles.
-
As always, it depends. A random short list would be comprised of:
-Mitsubishi Evo VII Tommi Makinen Edition
-Nissan Skyline R34
-BMW E36 M3
-Maybach 62
-20's model Rolls Royce Silver Ghost
-Ferrari 360
-Porsche Carrera GT
-
Gotta go with the XKE Coupe, but garrettwc's Toyota 2000 GT is nice, too. Too bad they didn't last very long.
The original engines in the "E" type XK Jaguars were in-line 6's.

What do you say?
crumpet. crumpet collector. not crumper.
That line was written, IIRC, by the late Henry E. Manney, a wonderful writer who happened to work in the automotive field.
-
I've always liked these:
The Plymouth Superbird.
And these:
'71 Plymouth Cuda convertible.
-
I didn't know it was possible for a car to have a mullet.
-
wasrjoe- hahahahahahha!
-
i can't tell if this thread has just drifted or if most folks don't really understand what a "crumpet collector" is.
it has very little to do with being a car you are partial to or that you think is "cool"...it has to do with what will attract crumpets (girls, babes, chicks). the original XKE had 3 things going for it:
1. an engine that purred and throbed...considered the smoothest in-line 6 until the advent of the BMW in-line 6
2. it was a convertable
3. the extended and rounded nose...think "wicked wanda"
-
65 Shelby GT350.
-
65 Shelby GT350.
YES!
I want one. =(
Though I'd rather have a '67.
But eh, I wouldn't complain about a '65.
-
1970 Olds 442 convertable with the W30 forced air package.
When I was in gradeschool, a friend of mine's dad had one in Canary Yellow with Black stripes, but the idiot burned it up whne he tossed a cigarette out the window which sucked back in before he parked it for the night.
Here's a similar one on Ebay, but without the nice looking Olds rally rims. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4537358734&category=15287
-
That danged "t" got away from me. I meant "crumpet", not "crumper".
-
Sorry, guys, but American cars simply don't qualify for "coolth". Power, yes; size, yes; but coolth, no. Now, if you want cool, how about the Bentley 6 from the 1930's?
-
but garrettwc's Toyota 2000 GT is nice, too. Too bad they didn't last very long.
Bite your tongue Penman. That's a Ferrari, not a rice burner. :p
-
Bite your tongue Penman. That's a Ferrari, not a rice burner. :p
Yeah I hate those trashy "ricers" like this ugly thing:
-
1958 Porsche 356 Speedster. Mmmm.
-
I must be weird. This is about the coolest car I've come across.
Although Pebcac's 356 is pretty sweet.
-
but garrettwc's Toyota 2000 GT is nice, too. Too bad they didn't last very long.

Yup, realized that after a while. I'll go stand in the corner with an oil funnel on my head...
-
Now Daniel, I didn't say rice burners were trashy. In fact I like some of the newer tuner cars such as the Skyline you posted. They're just in a different class from a vintage Ferrari.
-
garrettwc- Sorry I just get irritated when people say "ricer" or "rice burner". Even though people maintain that it isn't, to me it is a racist term. Anyway, Nissan is coming out with a special edition GT-R Z-Tune Skyline, 10.06 in the 1/4 from the factory. Limited to 20 worldwide and a GREAT bargain at $170K. Now where did I stash all my loose change...
-
Precherman,
American cars are what defines "cool". Here's some examples.

-
No harm done Daniel. I never saw it that way, but your point has merit. Something to consider.
-
Gotta agree with Pebcac. No car does it for me like an early Porsche. I don't even care much for the new ones.
Chris
-
Drooling over that "Sniper"...
-
Hmmm, I'm kind of surprised that so many of my faves are being listed here. But coolest has to be http://www.motorbase.com/vehicle/by-id/51/gallery.ehtml
How about most beautiful ? I really like the new Ford GT. I am also a big fan of the looks of the old Dino Ferrari. But most beautiful production car ever ? I'll add another vote to the Jaguar XK-E. No contest. And this was what, 1961 or so ?
-
Sorry, guys, but American cars simply don't qualify for "coolth". Power, yes; size, yes; but coolth, no. Now, if you want cool, how about the Bentley 6 from the 1930's?
I disagree. "Coolness" is defined by popular culture and its embrace of a "something" that's seen as "Cool".
Popular culture embraces American cars like no other. Show me a movie with a chase scene as celebrated as that between Steve McQueen's '67 Mustang and the '68(?) Dodge Charger in the movie Bullitt. James Bond movies have good chase scenes but are really more about the gadgets in the car than the car itself.
Or show me a movie like "American Grafitti which pays homage to the "coolness" of American cars.
I can't recall any songs that celebrate a foreign car in the way the songs "Little Deuce Coupe", "409", etc. celebrate American cars.
Do cars get any cooler than this:
No, they do not.
-
Of course, that's not to say they don't get just as cool:
-
As much as I like the Ferraris, this is what I believe to be the coolest car ever made. And speaking of crumpet collectors/knicker droppers, my Grandfather had a 62 and the family rumor is that it was where I was conceived. Unfortunately, my jackass father totalled it when I was about 2. It would have been mine.
OK, I can't figure out how to post a pic. Anyways the car is the Aston Martin DB4 Vantage convertible.
Let's try a link.

Agreed. Part billy goat, part American Icon, part Hero. Anyone that's never ridden in one can't understand. Fix it with duct tape and bailing wire on the side of a mountain, miles from civilization. Bounce and putt along at 5mph over terrain most people wouldn't walk over....I love Jeeps
-
Perhaps not the coolest car in the WHOLE world, but for now, the coolest car in MY world. And the most complicated!
Still haven't had it over 4000 RPM.....darn break-in period.
-
CHL: Here, here. I prefer em in forest green, though, with white stripes .
-
I'm kinda partial to Elanore.
But the GT40 and TNGO's Superbird rub me the right way, too.
-
DJJ, I see you finally made your decision. It took me a few days before that hit me. Excellent choice. Nice ride you got there. Figured out any of the complicated bits yet?
-
All this and it cost $0.
You paid too much !
-
DJJ, I see you finally made your decision. It took me a few days before that hit me. Excellent choice. Nice ride you got there. Figured out any of the complicated bits yet?
Everything but the area from the grille to the firewall, and between the fenders. Subaru must install their engines with a shoehorn. But so far, it's a sweet little machine.
-
Have you seen the brand-spanking new Shelby yet? I think, actually, that someone here had photos of them attending an expo where it was displayed. For me, that or a Viper GTS might be the prettiest thing around.
However, I of course have a very special place in my heart for my '55 Studebaker Commander.... an absolute beauty. Sounds even better than it looks.
-
My dad almost bought a '70 or '71 E-Type (V12, but before the plastic tumors on the bumper) in the late 70s. To this day he wishes he bought it and I wouldn't be surprised if he bought one in the next few years.
IMO, it's pretty hard to define the "coolest" car ever. Just about anything from Maranello is gorgeous (the Daytona roadster looks a lot better than the coupe IMO). That being said, the coolest car that I've ridden in was a '99 355 Barchetta at a track day at Summit Point a couple years ago. It wasn't the fastest car on the track (there was an FD RX7 that had a ton of suspension work and was probably making over 400hp), but it was definitely the sweetest sounding street car I've seen in person. The coolest car I've driven is a 3.0 E36 M3 with a Dinan supercharger and chip, glasspacks, coilovers, huge swaybars, and R compound tires that belongs to one of my dad's best friends. ~330whp and no detectable body roll
-
The third generation RX-7 is worthy of being mentioned in this thread.
-
Classic
-----------------------------------
1953 Dodge Power Wagon
1967 Shelby GT 500
Modern
------------------------------------
Hummer H1
2005 Ford Mustang V8 (Modified something similar to this)
That's my Favorites
-
I respectfully submit that the coolest car ever is the 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California. OH YEAH!
-
Oh man, I totally forgot about the 250GT. Definitely in the cool category.
-
Get me one too, please.
-
I found a new one last night. A brand new BMW 645 mit droptop. Man, was that one sweet ride.
Saw another one today. A black coupe. Even sweeter than the convertible.
-
Dannyboy- The 6 series is indeed sweet. I was very surprised at how well they perform. I was expecting a nice roadster more than a sports car when I drove it. BMW also has plans to come out with an M6.
-
Tsk, tsk, this thread was about crumpet catchers sirs and ladies opinions often vary wildly from our own. Spoilers and other plastic "enhancements" give out all the wrong messages .
My choice would be specific to the type of young lady whose knicker elastic I was wanting to twang.
427 Shelby Cobra
An XJS V12 in BRG with lister engine and handling packs and japanese electrics
Daytona coupe in black and pray she was not old enough to remember Miami Vice (yes I know that one was a replica)
Mk2 jag
and if all else failed a silver DB5
-
Zed had me until that last one.
Here's my next car:
-
I submit this one:
-
I used to pick up a lot of chicks with one of these:
But I was paying my college tuition in the summers by driving them into and out of the Wisconsin River, hauling loads of tourists for an hour each. I've found a couple DUKW's for sale local to me that intrigued me, especially during hurricane evacuation season, when gridlock on the highways was the norm. A DUKW would be great for getting out of town via the Intracoastal Waterway!
