Title: Superstorms: Mother Erf is a single mom, dancing on the magnetic pole

No, it's not globular warming, according to this article.  It's our pole shifting, and the sun's interaction with Earth's magnetosphere.

I thought Stephen King might like this pic though:

If you want to run and play, come along the BEAM today!

I just hope we're closer to Maturin's end rather than Shardik's.

Yeah, that's not *expletive deleted*ing scary at all...

APS take on it?

As long as the "crown" stays in place towards the sun, we have our radiation shield.

So, if the North/South flip happens perpendicular to the sun, it'll suck some... but not nearly as much as if the North/South flip happens with one of the poles FACING the sun.  That'd suck a lot.

I'm okay with the North Pole traveling towards China and Russia.  It can traverse along their territory.

I wonder what happens if one of the poles (or both) wind up in ALIGNMENT with the Sun?  Can it get stuck due to magnetic attraction?  Then the earth "rolls" in its orbit with one face constantly towards the Sun, and one face constantly dark.  Imagine the epic wars for that strip of habitable land along a new equator...

One of the comments in the original article provided this much more level-headed take from NASA...

Ha!
Thanks Nightfall.  That was an interesting article.

To the best of my knowledge the earths orbital position and magnetic alignment are unrelated. At least to the degree that a change of the magnetic alignment would not change our orbit.

As to the pole being aligned towards the sun, that would be interesting, and most likely bad.

Back in the early 1980s there were a couple of then-well-known (and somewhat sensationalist) books published on this subject, basically predicting that a pole shift was imminent and would result in wide-spread cataclysm. One of them was cleverly entitled "Pole Shift," by a guy named John White, whom I met a few years after he wrote the book.  Turns out his scientific background was having been a Navy deck officer during Vietnam, and then working as a advertising hack for an electric utility company. He wrote pseudo-scientific and metaphysical books on the side.

Last I knew (which was at least ten years ago), IIRC he had completely backed off from any expectations that pole shift was imminent (or even possible).

yea, in the past 53 years my pole has shifted completely from north to south.  :'(

Would I be able to get a refund on the compasses I have laying around?

Your compass would still point to Magnetic North, North would just be in a different direction than before, and you'd likely have to recalculate your declination.

So that's what that is, a pole shift.  Now I understand, and I don't like it one bit.    Way too much pole shifting going on here.  Too much time spent in the gym trying to shift it back.

If it gets too close to the equator, then directions tend to get really screwy.

Wow whoda thunk that the great big glowy thing in the sky and the erf's magnetic poles would play key role in our climate ?

Climate you say? I always thought the magnetic poles were there just so a compass would have some way to point.

Santa would start wearing board shorts and have flying dolphins instead of raindeer.

At least there'd be solid ground under him in Antarctica.

Where there's a real land mass under him.

As opposed to the NP, where there's nuthin' but water under the ice.

And with the globular warminizationess, there might not be any ice.

And how about Sooperman's Fortress of Solitude at the NP?

Huh?

Huh? Huh? How about that?

Lotsa momentious changes afoot.

Superman will simply pick up his fortress of solitude and move it to another spot.  ;)

I picked this up from an article a few weeks ago about the renumbering of tampa's runways.
So what makes it go back and forth?

The magnetic north pole is always slowly moving and is currently heading towards Russia from its current position in far northern Canada. The magnetic north pole moves by around 64 km (40 miles) a year because of changes within the Earth’s core (unlike the true north pole which moves very slowly due to tectonic plate movements). It has moved from extremes of around 10 degrees east in the late 16th century to 25 degrees west early in the 19th century, and is now at around 3 degrees west.
