Title: Finally got a new truck!
Post by: Declaration Day on February 10, 2011, 05:20:47 PM
Some of you may remember my various rants about my '05 Chevy Silverado, which I nicknamed The Money Pit.

-Starter failed at less than one year old.  Replaced under warranty, but still.....
-Truck inexplicably scorched the terminals on 3 factory batteries (first two replaced under warranty).  I eventually replaced it with a 1,000 amp Bosch and it was fine from then on.
-All oxygen sensors had failed at least once
-Airbag module failed
-First alternator failed just out of warranty.
-Tailgate latches were replaced once under warranty, then again two years later out of my pocket.
-At four years old, the heads of the bolts that held on the driver's side exhaust manifold snapped off, and the manifold came off the engine while I was driving.
-A year ago, the fuel vapor reclamation thingy clogged, and I wasn't able to pump gas directly into my truck.  I had to fill a five gallon gas can and pour it in, over and over.  I finally dropped the tank and disconnected it.
-CD player failed twice, once under warranty.  Eventually replaced it with an aftermarket one.
-Wire harness for the blower motor resistor melted and was replaced under warranty.  Less than a year ago, it melted again and nearly caught the truck on fire.  I disconnected it before that happened.  In retrospect, I should have let the POS burn to the ground.
-The ABS module sprung a leak, and rather than paying $600 for a new one, I bypassed it.
-At the time of trade in (today), the speedometer was going haywire, the cabin temp control had two settings (full blast heat or off), the brake lights stopped working (that happened a week ago) and when I put the truck in 4wd, all of the gauges except tach and speedo would die.

There are a few more things which I may edit in later, but that's all I can remember for now.  FYI the truck only had 83,000 miles at trade in.

The dealer gave me $8,500 for a truck I would have happily given away.

So here's my new toy, a 2011 Ram 2500HD, 4x4, 5.7L Hemi.  =D

Nice truck indeed! :)

Looks sharp, hopefully it gives better service than your previous vehicle. ;)

It HAS to.  There could not possibly be a worse vehicle on this planet than my old Chevy.  Except maybe a Trabant.

Now that you have a dodge, you must learn to road rage, and hang some truck nutz off it.

Hey I plow snow for a living.  You think you've seen idiot drivers out there?  You have no idea.  If I were a road-rager, I would have been put in prison years ago!  =D

Being here in Texas reinforces it.  Chevys and Fords are usually stock.  Dodges, though, get big truck nutz, smoke stacks, and are driven by hicks who do 70 in a 45 and cut everyone off waving a middle finger, natural light, with their mullet flopping around.

Heh, it is not a 100% thing.  It does seem though that folks who are going to act like that, no matter what they drive, tend to gravitate towards the Dodge trucks.

They're compensating for something -- I'm not sure exactly what.  (probably for not having a Ford or Chevy)

Hilarious!  For the record I am a much more courteous driver than most, I have a military haircut, all of my teeth, dislike country music, and am a beer snob (Natural light? Barf!)

Seriously though, another GM truck was out of the question, for obvious reasons.  And Ford couldn't beat the deal I got on the Ram, not to mention the fact that Ford is trying to peddle a warmed-over 14-year-old design as "new".  Even if I preferred the Ford, it was several thousand dollars more.

Dodge's advertising feeds the beast.  Like the one with George Washington in a Charger...   I wonder how many rednecks hollered and saluted the TV.....

Congrats a fine ride!

I bit the bullet and bought a new Dodge last fall.  I absolutely LOVE it.  Best truck I have ever owned, hands down.  And I have owned quite a few.

Here is a pic of mine, just cause I love to show it off. lol

Yep...and don't forget the camo seat covers....so the spilled beer don't show.....

Sorry for the difference in price, but there's a lot to be said about a 14-year-old design that still works.....namely, that it still works....I love my debugged technology Ford.....  =D

Its the same up here. Stereotypes get started for a reason.
Yesterday, I saw a dodge broken down on the side of the freeway holding up traffic. It had smoke stacks, a light bar, and two bumperstickers on the back window(of course): "Loud Pipes Save Lives" and "I Still miss my ex-wife, but my aim is getting better"
Wish I would have taken a picture.

Ok guys, this is my first full day as a Dodge owner.

I went to the local bar this morning and had a tall Pabst Blue Ribbon draft for breakfast.

Then I headed to Pep Boys for some white trash accessories.  They had no NASCAR stickers or anything!  I did find a hitch-mounted bottle opener, but then realized for $25 I can buy a LOT of Natural Light, and it comes in cans anyway!

I did have one other Dodge owner try to race me at a light, but he don't got no Hemi.  He must be gay.

Anyway here is my first Dodge accessory.  Please tell me I don't actually have to drink it.

I've heard that NL is great for cleaning road grime & paint from your rims...

Not to be outdone by the Dodge-e-Boyz, I have a few ideas planned for my F150....just little stuff like a spray-on bedliner in a light color (black surfaces and Texas summers just don't mix) and a couple of side-mounted toolboxes. I'm even thinking of getting one of those 1-million-candlepower, 360*, remote-controlled spotlights installed on the cab. Any suggestions on a good brand?

Thanks!  They call it Mango Tango Pearl coat, 2010 is the only year they did this color.

I went back and forth between a half ton and a three quarter ton.  I couldn't see the advantage, or the loss of fuel economy.

The only truck I have ever owned that was almost as nice as this was my '02 Chevy Avalanche.  But this one edges it out in several areas.

Smaller trucks have their place, depending on your needs.  I suspect that the reason smaller trucks are such a niche market is that, for a few thousand dollars more, you can get twice the truck.

With Dodge, the mid-size Dakota starts at $23,110 and the Full-size Ram starts at $20,810.  ???

Agreed....while I loved my Frontier, I was amazed at how much more truck I got with my F150 for less money....and I actually got better gas mileage from the F150 than the Frontier....

You're right about that -the frontier gets worse mileage than my buddy's Hemi Ram.  My wife and I operate under the theory that one of us will likely end up driving the other's vehicle at some point.  She is 5' tall and thinks anything bigger than a Camry is "monsterous". Oh well...I'm pretty happy with it -it is a truck at least.

Yea, but they have to signal with one of the lamps - so when you accidentally bump your turn-signal when you spill your beer (that's the only time you should be using turn signals), the light blinks on and off.  if it's not mis-wired, you're not doing it right.

That crowd used to drive Ford's until Dodge redesigned the Ram and offered the Cummins diesle in 1994.  The migration was completed in 1997 when Ford redesigned the F150.

Well...I'm pretty confident dodge's advertising contributes to the purchasing demographic.  Ford and Chevy advertise as no nonsense work trucks.  Dodge likes commercials that make nascar ads seem tame....

The main problem I have with Ford's gas trucks is the rough ride. The F250 Superduty we have at work is rather reliable, but damn if it won't jar your teeth out going over the smallest of bumps that my Silverado doesn't even notice...the F-150s I test drove before I brought my Silverado were also similarly rough (that was before the frickin' bailout, by the way, or I would definitley have gone with a Ford)

Their post Powerstroke diesels are pretty sorry...shame.

My F250 also has seriously overbuilt suspension.  Empty, it rides... like a truck.

It evens out a whole lot if you have some weight it in, which makes sense.  It's designed to safely carry near two tons fully loaded - the suspension has to be rather stiff if it's to do this.

If you want to drive a truck with no load in the bed all day, drive a car or suv.
