Title: Special Brandy Suggestions
Post by: SADShooter on February 17, 2011, 02:42:43 PM
Backstory: Saturday is my 40th birthday. I've bought myself a bottle of brandy on or near my birthday ever since I turned 21. (Silly tradition I thought made me more sophisticated). I've had most of the mainstream cognacs and variants (Hennessy, Courvoisier, Remy Martin, Martell, etc.) and some more exotic fare (Carlos I, Metaxa, Asbach Uralt). So, to my fellow knowledgeable boozers, please share your thoughts on something a little unique to commemorate the miracle of my continued survival.

Thanks,

SADShooter

Buy a nice bottle of good Catholic Irish whiskey:  Jamison
Then buy a bottle of good American booze:  American Honey.  Wild Turkey bourbon + honey.

Take a proper glass and mix the two 50-50 neat, and sit back and enjoy.

Ok.  I do believe this is a record, even for APS.  The FIRST POST in reply is not answering the OP's question.  That's gotta be a record for thread drift, even around this place....

And in keeping with APS tradition..........................

You'll want to get yourself a good snowblower, because you really don't wanna be shoveling snow on your birthday.

Guys. Guys. I have consumed enough whiskey (I'm currently imbibing Balcones True Blue for the first time--interesting) to float at least a missile frigate, maybe something bigger. The brandy is a specific mandate of the tradition.

At the suggestion of my local dealer, I have a bottle of Kelt VSOP ready for opening on Saturday.

My buddy and I have been sipping on Chocoviac when we have been ice fishing. It does taste pretty good at 7am.

Sadly they've shut down several years ago now, but RMS was a great brandy.  I still have half a bottle of their 10 year old Pinot Noir brandy.  I've seen it in one liquor store in L.A. about a year and a half ago.  If I wasn't seriously worried about money at the time I'd have taken the lot.  They also had a really good selection of other brandies.  I wish I could remember the brands.  Some American, some French.  But all looked very good.  Prices ranged from $40-400.  I never though I say this, but this memory makes me want to go back to L.A.

How about Gran Duque De Alba?

Also thanks for the reminder. Picked up some Carlos-I when I was in Spain (which was promptly gifted to Dad) and I need to find some more.

The Domecq family has been making brandy for nearly eight centuries.  While the Mexican products are good, I prefer the Spanish.  Fundador is about as low as I would go for celebratory libation.

There are several California wineries now making brandy, most at quite a price.  The only one I have tried is Jessups and that only sparingly.  On a par with Remy Martin VSOP, perhaps a bit better.

Record hell !!

That's par for the course !!

I will also point out that it took to reply #8 before we got something close to an answer to the OP's question.

GO APS !!!!

Somebody has to keep a close guard on tradition.  I am proud to be that guardian.

Oh... and bacon flavored brandy would be good.

I'm actually unsure about bacon-flavored brandy. However, bacon cooked and then flambeed with brandy could be worth trying.

I also like Spanish brandies, and Gran Duque de Alba, Domecq and some others are on the list.

You will like Kelt. I prefer Tour du Monde by Kelt, decent stuff, bit pricey though. It's my standard gift for friends on special occasions. :)

Damn.  I though it read "Special Brady Suggestions."

Pardon me while I go clean  my glasses.

Thread drift? Thread drift? Somebody's bellyaching about thread drift? On APS?  (https://armedpolitesociety.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.loesch.org%2F%7Earviel%2Fhysterical.gif&hash=08b0a4a1d7705860d65d63d1f14dbc8dffc47d07)

PTK:

I just checked, and the Tour du Monde is actually what I bought, so your endorsement is reassuring. =D

230RN:

I don't have that kind of money, charm, or influence, so I have to settle for brandy  ;)

So did I.  And, boy, did it pique my curiousity!

I have some "suggestions" for the Brady Bunch, and was really looking forward to special input from the APS experts.

AAR:

Birthday was mediocre, as expected. The Kelt TDM is excellent. And sanglant, Christian Brothers has been my father's poison of choice for the last 25 years or so. I have put away my share plus a bit. ;)

Glad to hear you enjoyed the Kelt. :)

And, really, I don't recall the last time a birthday was special - mediocre will do, as long as it's one more year alive. ;)
