A couple of years ago a friend tried to convince me to invest in rhodium at about $240 an ounce. He was sure he would make his money back...
I thought it would be like the silver I hold... A long period of stagnation...
So, he and his wife and parents bought close to 400 ounces of rhodium.
Rhodium today is trading in the $4,200 an ounce range.
Sigh...

Keep your eyes out on the science/technology news front for new technologies requiring odd metals. The rare earth metals are, well, more rare, and if there's a sudden demand, then there's your profit
Rhodium's likely trading that high because IIRC it's an essential ingredient in fast lightoff catalytic converters for cars, along with platinum and palladium.

I've never even heard of the stuff.

Well, my dad a'h used to tell me about a great real estate opportunity he missed out on. He was taking a vacation in Cuba c.1958 and staying in a little pension on the beach. The proprietor was trying to get him to invest in a sure thing--a resort project on the Isle of Pines off the coast of Cuba. He declined.
I would be a much better investor if I used a rear view mirror. Most of us would. No use crying about it.
Rhodium, fwiw, is a platinum-group metal, similar to palladium. I think the Germans have used it in the past to plate guns on occasion.

It doesn't have to be metals. I bought coffee futures back in the mid 90's before Brazil had an unexpectedly bad freeze.
I do kick myself mentally for not buying cobalt in the early 80's, though.

Rabbit.
