...that it mistakes a faux katana for a "rifle."

The "rifle" in question:

Srsly.
Our stupid hoplophobic society can't tell a japanese samurai sword from a rifle.
And to top it all off... it's an umbrella. With a katana handle.

In what way/shape/form does a samurai sword look like a rifle? ??? ??? ???

If anything, it kinda looks like a rail with no barrel attached.

Looks to me like a piece of rebar. Ban it.

the importent thing we should discuss about this story is...
Where does one get an umbella with a katana handle?
=D

āIād do it all over again if this happened tomorrow,ā said Kent, who said about 40 officers responded to the scene from his department, surrounding departments, the State Police and federal agencies such as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.
Okay, I can see hitting the Bat Signal for multiple reports of "Man with Rifle in Mall", but it looks like the only Feds NOT called were the National Park Service Rangers.
State Police also said in a statement that a man had called them to report that he was the person seen in the mall. Troopers and officers went to the area of the nearby Lahey Clinic hospital, where the man worked, and interviewed him, determining he was not a threat.
Yet despite all of the above, he managed to slip through their net and walk to work.
The Burlington Mall was used as the setting for the Kevin James comedy movie "Paul Blart: Mall Cop."

"See something, say something", it will get people killed. And the killers have immunity.

It is long and thin. How does it not look like a rifle?
-
I could see how a quick glance from a distance might make you think it is an AR15 bull barrel and gas block. Cops have shot people holding less threatening looking objects.
I'd rather have a rifle that looks like an umbrella.
-
Hmmmm.....a rifle disguised as an umbrella with a katana handle....I need to find a machinist....

I've wanted this ever since I first saw this on ThinkGeek close to a decade ago.
Thing is I never use umbrellas. http://www.thinkgeek.com/homeoffice/gear/d163/

State Police spokesman David Procopio also said the umbrella did look like a rifle when it was protruding from the man's backpack.
He praised the 911 callers for "being perceptive and vigilant and we are grateful for their call."
Procopio called it a "case of mistaken impression ... one that was easy to make because the umbrella really looked like a weapon."
Yeah -- a Samurai sword, not a rifle. The real question is, how effective is any SWAT team against a Highlander? If the only way to kill an immortal is to cut off his head with a sword, are SWAT teams now supposed to deploy with swords?

Thinkgeek has those, plus Blade Runner-style light-up umbrellas. Among many, MANY other cool items.

"He praised those who had reported the man for "being perceptive and vigilant and we are grateful for their call.""
Because every responder then got overtime without facing any actual threat?

LOL!! Oh lord

And yet another reason why I transport my long guns in nondescript cases.
-
Whenever I transport the 590, I usually stick it down a pair of jeans (that I'm not wearing)
-
I sometimes use curtain rod boxes. I have also got actual rifle shipping boxes from my local gunnery place. They may have logos on them, but they're not usually spotted.
