Title: The price of bacon
Post by: MillCreek on April 24, 2011, 06:15:35 PM
We stopped by Safeway this morning to pick up some lamb on our way home from church.  I happened to go buy the bacon case on my way to get cheese.  Holy moly, what is happening to the price of bacon?  Oscar Meyer thick cut at $ 7.99 per pound?  The Safeway house brand thick cut at $ 5.99 per pound.  I am going to start keeping an eye out for coupons and stocking up the freezer when it goes on sale.

I was always $7.99/lb.  You're remembering it incorrectly.  There is no inflation, please move along.

Corn is up well over 100% in the last 12 months. Thank ethanol and alternative energy for the trickle-down effect. Growing food in commercial quantities as an energy product is always a dumb idea.

I buy the 3# boxes of bacon ends and pieces -- generally about $5 a box.  It's a little harder to fry, but it tastes the same.

(maybe I shouldn't have posted the secret...)

That and actual pork numbers are down, so the number of pork bellies is in low inventory.

Normal pork cuts are cheap right now. Bacon and Ribs are $$ I paid $3.99 a lb yesterday (on sale) for baby back ribs, these used to $2.99 regular price.

Crude prices are way up.

Then we need to drill for more bacon....

We have PLENTY of bacon, no need to drill for more.

I have great trust that the fine folk in Berlin Washinton will not let the Mark Dollar collapse.

We need to start another swine flu scare over the internetts. Nevermind you can't catch it from eating pork, prices were in the crapper the last time around on that.

Not if you're an executive or major stockholder for Archer-Daniels Midland or some other major producer of fuel ethanol - they paid good money to select congresscritters for the Congressional mandates that gasoline be diluted with ethanol; combine that with Federal ethanol subsidies & grants, and they got a pretty good return on their investment, I suspect.
