It's got extremely stern and negative body language.
And his pants are too big, with a severe crease to them.
And the face on this statue doesn't much look like Dr. King.
And... it was outsourced to CHINA! [barf] We have a monument on the National Mall with a "Made in China" tag on it.

Lowest bidder?
-
How is it not a racial faux pas by the chinese to make it out of white stone? ???
-
Standing in the shadow of the Washington Monument, the statue shows Dr King emerging from a mountain of Chinese granite Walmart with his arms crossed and is called The Stone of Hope Greeter.
fixed

He looks angry.
However, that makes sense given all the steps backwards the civil rights movement has taken since he was killed.

Pure Comedy Gold
This Martin Luther King National Memorial, which will be dedicated on August 28 on the Mall in D.C., is shaping up as the kind of farce that H.L. Mencken would have enjoyed. The vaguely Chinese-looking giant statue itself looks like the woozy recollection of some Chinese sculptor who doesn't actually remember MLK (hey, he was busy at the time being Culturally Revolutionized -- Mao didn't even allow mention of the moon landing), nor know many black people, but he does remember Mike Tyson trying to glare down Evander Holyfield at a heavyweight title bout weigh-in (assuming Iron Mike were a little Chinese).
So, we get Martin Luther Ming the Merciless. As a commenter suggests: Martian Luther King...
During the next ten days of solemnities up through the dedication, no giggling allowed! This is a very serious occasion in the national civic religion and anyone who cracks a smile will be dealt with.

I would weep for the memory of Doctor King if but for my soul had not already been shorn and shattered by the cynical erosion of the events of our age.

And if it were black stone? One word: pigeons.
-
If he had made the ears a little bigger and the face a little narrower....

Fear not! Dr. King's family has done nicely in arranging for Dr. King's image to be used in Dr. King's memorial.

Looks to me like Dr. King is being dishonored by his own family.

This too. $800,000 to be ALLOWED to create a memorial???

What good is being a hero if you're not also a brand?
How long before The National Mall has a corporate sponsor?

I think they would ask for the Washington Monument only if Trojantm doesn't beat them to it.....

Hey...don't tell the Chinese how to run their country. China is just a subsidiary of GM, GE, Walmart, and everything else American. People who complain will have their kidneys removed and sold.
Oh...I think the statue looks good. I'd imagine he spent most of his waking hours pissed off. His son said it looks like the man he remembers...and he's probably right...pissed off.
-
Looks more like Michael Clark Duncan than Martin Luther King, IMO. And the body looks very Mao-ish. See the square coat line and protruding stomach in other photos.
This is what happens when you outsource to China.

That it does. In fact, the first time I saw it I thought that it WAS a statue of Mao until the reporter said it was of MLK.

I'm thinking the style is "socialist heroic"

I'm thinking the style is "socialist heroic"
Which is quite understandable, since the artist is 1. Chinese and 2. Formerly a designer of Mao statues.
-
Some wag somewhere said it was a statue of Martin Luther Ming.

That was my impression as well.
Maybe they can hand out "little red books" at the ceremony.

Maotin Luther Ming the Merciless
-
A perfect blend of Karnak, Stonehenge, and Red Square, aka socialist kitsch.

Angry Mao is angry.
The king monument does look a lot like a chinese version of king. I had to google Mao statue to refresh my memory of what those looked like, and every one of them showed a smiling grandfatherly figure waving to the people- as most evil dictators are depicted.

Who approved this statue? Why did The Rest of Us not have a say, much less a veto, in this matter? Does not the National Mall belong to the American People? All of this pharaonic deification seems frankly inappropriate for a man who is remembered for expanding social liberty.
