WELDON, N.C.—When a hurricane makes landfall, the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency relies on a couple of metrics to assess its destructive power.
First, there is the well-known Saffir-Simpson Wind Scale. Then there is what he calls the "Waffle House Index."
Green means the restaurant is serving a full menu, a signal that damage in an area is limited and the lights are on. Yellow means a limited menu, indicating power from a generator, at best, and low food supplies. Red means the restaurant is closed, a sign of severe damage in the area or unsafe conditions...
In a recent academic paper, Panos Kouvelis, a business-school professor at Washington University in St. Louis, pegged Waffle House as one of the top four companies for disaster response, with Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Home Depot Inc. and Lowe's Cos...
The company began tracking Irene 10 days ago, moving ice and eggs to staging sites outside the potential damage zone.
On Friday, the company's mobile command center—an RV named EM-50 after Bill Murray's urban-assault vehicle in the 1981 movie "Stripes"—headed north from the Norcross, Ga., headquarters...
FTR, I loves me some Waffle House, as do my kids.
-
I had avoided WH for years, only to be pleasantly surprised when I met a friend at one in ATL. I'll definitely be hitting one up again soon.
-
I love Waffle House.
What has six teats and three teeth?
The morning shift at Waffle House.
-

Yep, they (metaphorically) shove a hot waffle iron up Nurse Mayor Bloomberg's southernmost orifice.

Loves me some waffle house
-
Waffle house is the awesome.
-
Never been to one. Will have to try that sometime.
-
No Waffle House to even try. :'(
-
Clark Summit, PA is the closest at 161.6 miles. Strangely enough I may be near there come October. ;)
-
The nearest wafflehouse to me is 2 states away. No wafflehouses in Montana or in a state that borders Montana.
-
So much for moving to Montana... =|
-
Nearest Waffle House to me is 638 miles away.
In about a month, the nearest one will be 1,005 miles away.
I think I'll stick with IHOP...
-
Since there are no Waffle Houses in the upper left corner of the country, what does 'scattered, smothered and covered' refer to in the context of hash browns?
-
You know whats just as awesome and spread around the east coast? HUDDLE HOUSE!!!!
-

When one order hashbrowns at Waffle House they are typically cooked in a ring, so they come on the plate in a nice circle. Keep in mind, these are shredded potato style hash browns.
Scattered refers to removing the ring and, well, scattering them about so you get more browned goodness. When adding something to the hash browns, one orders as listed on the menu. Smothered adds onions. Covered refers to a slice of american cheese on top. Capped adds mushrooms (ftr, I like mine scattered, smothered, covered, and capped) There are similar references for different items including ham, peppers, chili and cream/sausage gravy. For each thing you want added it's an extra, iirc, 35 cents. Then you have all the way, which is everything and the floor sweepings. Or double or triple order...if you're just that hungry.

SWMBO and I love our Waffle House, nothing like an unhealthy greasy breakfast for dinner.

Wow. Sign me up. I will go for scattered, smothered, covered, diced and capped.

I wouldn't be able to decide on what I would want, so it would be all the way for me. =D

Now you got me wanting to get up and go to WH. Only 2 mile away.
-
Where is the closest on to Kuwait?
Ate at a Waffle House back one morning while mobing at Camp Shelby. Had to run a guy to the airport so after dropping him off the group of us went to Waffle House for breakfast.
There is a Huddle House on base at Ft. Polk.
-
They eventually built a gun shop and a Waffle House across the street from where I first rented an apartment in Texas. Plus, it was 1/2 mile from work. Location, location, location.

Where's that cuss smiley when you need it?
A trip to the Waffle House in Clark Summit is a real possibility however. If you're catchin' my vibe. ;)

Pretty much a carbon copy of Waffle House. Found in WV, NC, VA, PA, MD that I know of.

Looks like they aren't in New England.
-
Nah, new England sucks. [barf]
We just got a Sonic locally and word has it the food sucks. Oh boy... ;/

Looks great.
What are YOU having?
-
So much for moving to Montana... =|
Or you have a business opportunity!
-
There seem to be a ton in AZ, but none in CA, NV, or OR. If I want their waffles, I guess I'm heading South. :)

Yes, indeed.

Do not make the faux pas I made first time ordering in a Waffle House. (FTR, they do not serve french fries.) The waitress kindly pointed out my misstep, but the louts I had chosen to dine with were less gentle in their remonstrations.
-
The above was just a picture I found on the interwebz (I know hate on me), but I do like the All Star Special: Scramble, Bacon, White Toast, Hashbrowns (Extra Smothered and regular covered) and a waffle.
-
Oh, ok, I thought you went to a WH to specifically take that picture and taunt me with it. I don't hate you so bad now. Maybe just a little still. =|
=D

We just got a Sonic locally and word has it the food sucks. Oh boy... ;/
Sonic is based in Oklahoma City and are all over the mid-West. Go there all the time and love it. Maybe they haven't got the kinks out yet or someone royally has screwed up. Sonic and suck do not go in the same sentence together unless you are talking about sucking one of their drinks through a straw.

In my home town the dirty bastages who owned it replaced a drive in that had been in operation since the 50's with unique and extremely good food with a very meh Sonic Drive in. Now, the Sonic drive in gets less traffic than the old local drive in and is probably going to go under.

I won't deny that Sonic never compares to the mom and pop's but they are becoming few and far between. :'(

Yeah, Sonic is all right. Not Chuck-A-Burger, but alright.
