Title: anyone else getting flooded?
Post by: geronimotwo on September 08, 2011, 10:57:14 AM
this is our fourth "100 year flood" since 1996.  all local roads are closed, with water rising on main st and the downtown areas.  yuck!

We had ours a few months ago, but right where we live was just fine except for some roads washed out.

Our county seat however was about half flooded with water up to 8 feet deep :(

We're having flash floods right now.

We live on the third floor. We're not concerned.

Hey Mak, here's a pic of a Park 'n' Ride lot in Reston (near Wiele I believe):

Wow...

GEICO must be feeling a disturbance in the force from that one.

But really, WTH... We've gotten an inch of rain since June.  That kind of water would probably just green it up a bit around here.

Actually, we were just there. We had to turn around and take Reston Parkway home. The water had receded some, but was still covering the road. It's nuts out there.

I know that section too.  Spent some time there last October with the FBI.
That's pretty amazing that the water was moving that fast, since I know no cars ever do through there.

Third floor doesn't stay there when FLoor One gets washed away.

Also power, food, heat, light?  Hope you're well stocked.

We are. :)

However, that was more said tongue in cheek. Obviously our vehicles are not on the top floor, but we also live at the top of a hill, so quite a lot of people will be flooded out before we have to get concerned.

Also, if I'm not mistaken, the videographer is videoing that 29 rafter from very near to the Red Lobster my wife and I had our first date at. That helps explain why many of my coworkers couldn't even get to Route 50 a little west of there.

We went on a walk today to survey the damage. Near us, at least, there was little to no damage to infrastructure, but it was clear that the water had gotten very high in the creeks and lakes, covering bridges and docks.

Lots of debris caught up along choke points.

Also my wife got freaked out by a MASSIVE spider. (Didn't have the camera, so no pics.)

But since I didn't have the camera, let me give you a wolf spider pic (what I think it was)

Rivers have flooded since time immemorial. It happens ... it's a fact of life.

And yet we homo sapiens persist in building things (including cities) in flood plains, and then complaining when the flood plain gets filled with water. :DUH: That's why it's called a "flood" plain.

Flood plains are nature's way of absorbing a flood and minimizing damage. Until we build in the flood plain. And then we build levees to protect the stuff we built that shouldn't be there in the first place. All that does is send more water downstream faster, ensuring (a) more damage wherever the water can get out, and (b) a hue and cry to build MORE levees, thus chasing the problem further downstream and making it somebody else's problem.

Can't help but think that homo sapiens is a poor name for our species. IMHO, the "sapiens" part is seriously in question.
