Some interesting stuff for conspiracy theorists (though not having made a comparison, the "DC streets" one is pretty good):

Well, color me stoopid, as it looks like a cheap overlay to me......

Links that take you to the actual images.

ETA: Some of these images were discovered back in 2006. http://www.gearthblog.com/blog/archives/2006/07/huge_scale_mode.html (http://www.gearthblog.com/blog/archives/2006/07/huge_scale_mode.html) Look at the other interesting locations.

In the Gizmodo link one image is described as a "complex" that is 5x10 miles, but they only show one big building. They must mean the area of the building. What would you store in a 5x10 mile building if you were the Chinese? Your clone army, or your dormant Terminators?

On some of the other sites with other pictures, the grid is conjectured to be for aerial/space targeting tests and blast damage assessment. There are pictures of bombed out buildings and damaged aircraft parked around a bullseye.

Military projects of some sort.

Looks like roads designed by the CA dept of transportation. =D
I seem to remember the old MX missile system having a network of roads similar to this. The only kicker is that the area isn't that large.

As a Californian I take umbrage. You are completely wrong. The roads on the Google images look like they've been maintained.

It obviously a Walmart reeducation or distribution center.

They appear to be segments of street/highway maps, clearly a test target. I have been mulling this over for a while and recently I saw a section of a Google maps photo of an area in NC that looked remarkably like the Gobi patterns.
